they have the right to do whatever they want. but if they let their dog roam around in an unfenced yard with a known aggressive dog next door, they should expect that bad things might happen. just seems like common sense to me.

[nq:1]The word "both" encompasses the requirement that Orson be on leash in his owner's yard, and that's the part that's ridiculous.[/nq]
Exactly.

Ok, once again:
Please explain how having Orson on a leash would have prevented the known aggressive dog from attacking him.
And please explain to me how a middle-aged blind dog beelining to his accustomed peeing spot in his own back yard, which is mostly fenced, with his owner standing right there, can be considered to be "roaming".

[nq:1]yeah, you'd be seeing different comments because i have a territorial dog-aggressive pit.[/nq]
If anyone's dog aggressive dog came on MY property to hurt my dogs, there will be hell to pay. I certainly have the right to expect my property to not be invaded by all and sundry (and their dogs too).

And why should I have my dogs on leash while they are in their own yard? When I'm out puttering about in the yard, doing my gardening, Pan likes to hang around with me, "help" me dig holes, eat mud, and generally make herself useful. Why should I be forced to either leave her inside or have her on leash (I certainly can't garden when I'm holding onto a dog) when she is perfectly well behaved and I have good voice control over her?

One day, while DH and I were squirrel-proofing our bird feeders, some GSD came trotting about. I gave it a pet without second thought, then realized hey, this isn't Khan! I spent a good 15 minutes trying to track it down, and found out that the dog belongs to the guy doing repairs next door. Lucky for the dog, it was a damned hot day, and Khan was enjoying his nap in the basement. He isn't overly fond of large unneutered males wandering into his territory and making themselves comfortable.

hey, if you want your dogs running about on an unfenced property, that's your thing. but i'd think you'd worry about other critters coming through. dogs, kids, cats, coyotes, bobcats, whatever. you say you have perfect voice control, but have you tested her with a cat/rabbit/squirrel running across the property?
it's your choice. and yeah, i'd be *** if any dog came over and hurt my dogs. but fortunately, i don't see that happening any time soon. i'm more worried about wildlife.

it just seems like it would be an unfair request to ask the neighbor to always leash their dog and Cate to not bother, if they share an unfenced border.
but again, i didn't realize Orson didn't make mistakes and wander across the line. i know in my neighborhood, dogs wander across property lines all the time.

I've followed you up to now, although I've disagreed with you, but you've completely lost me on this one.

[nq:1]if both yards are unfenced, both dogs should be leashed when outside.[/nq]
Umm...no. If both yards are unfenced, both dogs could potentially be off-leash, as long as the owners had sufficient voice control, and the dogs weren't aggressive. If you have a dog aggressive dog, and no control over it, you do not let it out without a leash on unless it is otherwise contained.
I could have Pan around a dog aggressive dog, unleashed, because of how well she listens. That I wouldn't do it, just means that I'm sensible enough to not take any chances.
