Are cats intelligent?

Many cat owners often say cats are too intelligent (or proud? ) to do those tricks that dogs usually do gladly. Others believe that cats are unintelligent because it's harder to train them. What opinion would you cling to and why?

I have had both cats and dogs.. right now I only have two cats, my dog is over at my girlfriends house.. so he is now more or less hers. back to the question at hand. I would say that cats are more intellegent.. I base my opinion off the fact that I have spent hours moping and scrobbing mud off the walls of my house when Luther would come in from the rain.. and yet the both cats can stay clean.. without redecorating.. But I am highly biased towards cats anyway.. anyway my opinions are usually wrong.. but there's my two cents

I think being "trainable" doesn't show how smart the animal is, so I can't say which of the animal is more intelligent. I think dogs can do somethings cats can't and vice versa.
