Blood in Poop -- Need AdviceThis is a discussion thread · 6 replies eddie: Every so often over the past month or two, our sun conure will have some blood in his poop. We of course took him to the Avian vet, who tested the poop for blood, and it was positive. A course of antibiotics was prescribed which seems to have had no effect. The blood is not constant. but in maybe a total of four or five poops per week. The bird is fine in every other way, including a very good appetite and is active and alert and seems as happpy as always. The doctor does not seem too concerned, and believes it may be only an inflammation of the cloaca.Any ideas? Should we be concerned? Anything in a diet that could be doing this?

I mean, it seems to me that it isn't normal... let alone good... for your little fella. What did the vet say about this inflammation of the cloaca?... did he say it's going to heal, did he prescribe anything or suggest dietary changes? Shannon

NaDeana: Just a thought, what are you feeding the bird when these poops occur???

oldmolly: [nq:1]Just a thought, what are you feeding the bird when these poops occur???[/nq]I wondered if red food was being fed, but she says that her avian vet has actually tested the poop for blood and it was positive. I would be seeking a 2nd opinion I think. Blood in poop is not normal, and I would imagine pretty debilitating in the long run,and bound to cause anaemia.

mdfloyd: I agree with getting a second opinion, after you rule out that what your conure is eating isn't making his poops red. Blood in the poop ain't good, no matter what's causing it. And if the antibiotics haven't "cured" the problem, then the problem has been accurately diagnosed.www.scritches.com everything but the bird

mdfloyd: CORRECTION! If the antibiotics haven't "cured" the problem, then the problem has NOT been accurately diagnosed. whew . . . .www.scritches.com everything but the bird

Not just an infection, but also tumors could be causing this as well. Good luck! Gloria
