Cat uses ficus pot as toilet

We have 3 cats we love very much. They have 2 litter boxes in the bathroom. There's unfortunately no space for the 3rd one. For years they've been using them fine but for the last two months our older cat (5 y/o) has been using our ficus pot instead of the toilet! We tried to break this habit but nothing helps. Anyone knows a good way to make him stop it?

Try covering the soil in the pot with some foil. Can you find a place for the third litter box elsewhere in the house? They say every cat should have their own litter box.

1 cat = 1 box . If not then the boxes MUST be completely clean at all times! you wouldn't want to go to the bathroom and see someone else left something there for you wouldn't you? Cats are very clean creatures and they should not have to use a box that was used by a different cat before. A lot of them hate to use the box even if what's left there is is theirs. So start to make it a habit of all the household members to pick up whats in there everytime they visit the bathroom in order to keep it clean at all times. I got some perfumed diaper bags that I scoop into every time I visit the bathroom so the box is always clean for his next visit because my cat will simply do it on the floor next to the box if I don't so I can only imagine 3 cats using 2 boxes. If you have the funds maybe try looking into an automatic box which cleans itself I've heard of people having 3-4 cats that used the same box successfully because it is always clean.
