I have a 4 month old 2, she is still be hand feed twice a day. She does eat fruits, but i have to hold the fruit for her. My main consern for her is that she will not eat the bird food that i purchased from the pet store. Should i be worried that all she wants is fruit, i dont want her to become ill from lack of nurtion. What should i do?
Hi anonymous.

What food did she eat before fruit, and will she eat it now instead of fruit? If she was used to food other than what you bought, it's not surprising she doesn't want to eat the "unknown" food. The more so if you give her tasty treats. Try giving her the food she was used to. If she doesn't refuse it, you can start switching her to another food if you like. Leave two food dishes in her cage at all times. One with the old food and one with the new food. It can take a few days before she gets interested in the new food, and please do not give her any treats during this time. The problem with fruit treats is that they are sugary. Birds, like kids, can get addicted to the sweet taste very quickly and refuse to eat anything else. If she's fine with eating the old food, an absence of fruit food should not harm. It can actually be healthier. When she starts eating the new food repeatedly, you can remove the dish with the old type of food and start giving her treats again. Don't forget to give her vegetables along with fruits.

If the above doesn't help for whatever reason, try offering her another brand of bird food, or/and try giving her the food from your hand and see how it goes. Maybe she doesn't mind the food itself but she's very used to hand feeding (was she weaned properly?) If she wasn't weaned properly, you'll need to keep on hand feeding (not treats but normal bird food - seeds and pellets) for a while until she's ready to wean and start eating from her dish.

Sometimes birds won't eat because they dislike the food dish no matter where you place it. Make sure you get one of those special cage dishes that can be attached to the cage. They usually work well.

P.S. I failed to figure what bird type you have.
