1 2 Do Shiba Inu's wag their tails? This is a discussion thread · 16 replies Cathy: Hi,I am fostering a shiba inu and his tail is usually tightly curled like a bun. I've noticed that this guy never wags his tail even though I know he's excited and happy... it never wags... nor does his butt wiggle like most dogs. Is that a common trait in this breed? No, they DON'T 'wag' AndreaS: Hi, I am fostering a shiba inu and his tail is usually tightly curled like a bun. They don't usually wag them, and when they do it's not much. One of my dogs, Boo, whose tail sticks up off her butt and /then/ curls (very) tightly, will wiggle it a little sometimes. Shane will do one or two wiggles once in a great while. nor does his butt wiggle like most dogs." No Basenji would ever deign to do a butt wiggle (at least I have never met one, and I've met some silly Basenjis), and I suspect Shibas are much the same. Very undignified! You don't realize how much information you get from your dog's tail!" I tend to pay more attention to carriage and over all body language. -Andrea Stone Saorsa Basenjis http://home1.gte.net/res0s12z/ The Trolls Nest - greenmen, goblins & gargoyle wall art www.trollsnest.com Perry Templeton: I have a Boston, whose (who's?) tail is non-existent and I have discerned a slight wiggle in her nub once or twice. Her other body language, however, speaks volumes.Perry Jag795: Hi, I am fostering a shiba inu and his tail is usually tightly curled like a bun. His tail does not "wag" like a Beagle or Labs does..but it does have a slight wiggle back and forth movement. You actually have to look for it - LOL..because of his tightly curled tail, it is not readily noticable. No butt wiggle..but the Shiba smile is unmistakenable. Have you been blessed with the Shiba Scream yet?? Jan Cathy: I am happily owned by a black & tan Shiba. His tail does not "wag" like a Beagle or Labs ... readily noticable. But you're right about the smile. Tell me about the Shiba scream. When I first brought him home, he told one of my other dogs to back off a couple of times but it sounded like a very high pitched bark. Is that the "scream"? He doesn't really make much noise...just every once in a blue moon, he'll bark at something. He is a cutie. I could be in trouble with this one but it wouldn't be the first time I failed at fostering. That's how I got my 3rd dog. -) Child: Hi, I am fostering a shiba inu and his tail is usually tightly curled like a bun. I've noticed that ... that a common trait in this breed? You don't realize how much information you get from your dog's tail! Cathy" My keeshond has a similar tail, except his is fuzzier and a little less squiggled. He wags, but RARELY. Only when really excited or trying to entice mommy to chase him. Whenever he does do it, it throws me into hysterics , because its not much of a wag, more like a side to side twitch. I think the curly tailed dogs wag less. I don't remember seeing any pugs wagging. Abby Pennington: I don't remember seeing any pugs wagging." Oh, but they do! It's just their butts are going so furiously at the same time, it's just not as visible in the madness. -Abby Pems, Aussie, and a Pug *Remove shoes to reply* Jag795: I have tried to detect even the smallest wiggle in that tail of his and so far.. nuttin. But you're right about the smile." Hmmm..keep watching or maybe ya got a non-wiggler there. It's very subtle...and actually kinda funny looking as another poster said of her dog. They can't hide the smile though! Twister smiles while were playing or when he's being mischievous (being a Shib-Head!). Tell me about the Shiba scream. When I first brought him home, he told one of my other dogs to ... Is that the "scream"? He doesn't really make much noise...just every once in a blue moon, he'll bark at something." Yes, they aren't very vocal dogs. I know the bark that you mentioned (the high pitched one). Nope, not the Shiba Scream yet. Twister also does this bark sometimes to new dogs or if he is uneasy for some reason. His alert bark (when he hears a noise outside or something)...is a much deeper, throatier bark. The Shiba Scream is something else. It totally sounds as if they are being killed! You'll know it when/if you get blessed with hearing it. Have you had to give him a bath yet or trim his nails? Or basically had to make him do something he decided he didn't want to? Mine is good with nail trimming (the power of cheese!), but bath time is another story. Luckily Shibas are very clean and don't need to be bathed often! He is a cutie. I could be in trouble with this one but it wouldn't be the first time I failed at fostering. That's how I got my 3rd dog. :-)" Soo..what are ya gonna name him? They are like potato chips ya know! My boy topped me out at 4 dogs but I know I will have more Shibas in my future. I'm on some great Shiba information lists. If you like, email me and I will give you the links to join. By the way..what color is your boy and where are you from? Jan in Ohio More
