Howdy, I have recently adopted an abondoned dog. The vet who took a look at the dog thought it was a german shepherd mix of some kind. I have taken pics of the dog and posted them on my website [link] I would like to be able to indentify the breed or combination of breeds. Any input is welcome Thanks

Hello, This is the first time I am visiting your group. I am thinking about getting a Westie for my 10 year old daughter. She seemed to have an allergic reaction to our golden retriever when she was a toddler. Does any one here know if Westies are hypo-allergenic? Reg

I'm just curious about this. I get to see a lot of dogs where I work and I noticed that many times if a Shepherd is crossed with something (even another dog that has ears that stand up) the ears are floppy (I've seen many husky/shepherd mixes like this). Does anyone know what causes this (I know it's probably soe sort of genetics thing) and can explain this in layman terms? Of course since they are crosses I suppose it could just be that they dn't know about the third dog in the mix:) (I'm supposing ears that stand up are not a dominate trait). Alice The root cause of problems is simple overpopulation. People just aren't worth very much any more, and they know it. Makes 'em testy. ...Bev

How come someone does'nt invent a spray product you could spray on a surface( newspaper ) so your pet would pee or deficate on it. This would be great at times when its raining super hard or during the 4th of July, just spread some newspapers on the floor in the garage or where ever and whala. Tom

We have a 7 month old Great Pyrenees puppy who weights 70 pounds. Currently he is 25 inches at the shoulder. Obviously we know we have a big dog - indeed this is what we wanted What I want to know is when are Great Pyrs generally finished growing? We want him to be taller - is there hope ? We love our Pyr and and call him "runt" He's the sweetest puppy. Any advice from Great Pyr owners about how many months old they stop growing? Thanks, - Rick

My family has a purebred Golden named Darla. She has for the most part been a sweet dog with a definite need to chew, which has been appeased with lots of toys and bones to chew on. In the last year if you see that she is chewing on something inappropriate and try to take it away from her she growls and snaps at you. A few months ago she was eating a tissue out of the garbage when my brother took it away from her she bit his hand. Darla gets car sick and needs to be medicated for the ride. Last week when my father arrived here from the trip he tried to coax the dog out of his truck and she bit him on the knuckle. We chalked this up to the medication and although he was afraid of her things pretty much went on as normal. Last night as we were preparing dinner Darla took a papertowel out of the garbage and dropped it on the floor as my mother bent to pick it up the dog grabbed onto her hand between the thumb and forefinger and would not let go, the gash has required 10 stitches to close up and there is a high risk of infection. When I approached my mother to care for the bite she lunged at me with her mouth open, my husband told her to go lay down and she went after him. I had to get the dog out of the house before my mother came back from the hospital. Animal Control picked her up (without incident) and have her quarantined for 10 days from today so we can decide what must be done. My father has a call into their vet and the breeder. Darla is 7 and has had some health problems mainly Lyme Disease for which she has been treated but it never actually goes away. We do not want to have her destroyed but my mother is now deathly afraid of her and we do not know what to do, having had dogs in our home all our lives and this being our 2nd Golden (the last died in 1996 at 13) we are beside ourselves. Darla is not aggressive in any other way other than if you take something away from her mouth. She LOVES water and is an avid swimmer, has never showed aggression towards my children until now. Cats do not bother her in the least, but she seems to be afraid of other dogs, but has showed no aggression towards them. I believe she would do fine in an adult home where they knew her boundaries, but I am not sure and you are the experts. We really need some advice on what to do, we are so heartbroken but feel we have no other choice. Thank you in advance for any help. Karen

The short of it: Which dog has a better temperment? The long of it: I have been researching chihuahuas for the past year. I had one as a child and I love the way they look (esp. the long haired ones),their sassy attitude and sweet loyalty. I am having a hard time finding a breeder that is ethical and also has a female available (they are booked up for a while if they are any good it seems). Another snag is that I would like a larger sized girl, a lot of breeders seem to go for the smaller end of the 4-6 lb ideal. I'd feel better about my dog's durability if it was 5-6 lbs. Anyway, the other day at the dog run I saw what I thought was the happiest cutest most energetic long haired female chihuahua ever. Turns out it was a papillon. This discovery made me think I had shut myself off too quickly to other options. The problem is I don't know anyone with a papillon. I wouldn't want to waste the time of a serious breeder, and I'm not sure how to get to know one (ditto for pomeranians, who I also adore from afar). My heart screams chihuahua, but when i picture that happy little papillon zooming around wanting to play with everyone...help! Any anticdotes, personal experience, tarot readings, whatever, would be welcome and helpful. Thanks! You can respond to me personally or on the boards. (p.s. To those with helpful rescue info: I'm interested in good rescue info/clubs for the future. For now, I only want a puppy from a breeder because it's my first dog as an adult and I want to make sure it has a good temperment and was screened for health problems specific to the breed- don't worry, I do plan on adopting a rescue pooch down the line!)

Could someone please give me an idea of how much these cute little things cost in the UK? Also, do they get on well with cats? Thanks in advance.

is kinda depressing. This will be Charm's grandkids, but none will have tan spots:( The dog is an American Ch, OFA tested hips and elbows, and cerfed, and is my tracking dog. He is half English. Chrystal is OFA tested hips and elbows, and cerfed...and half English from a different line. She is a TDX, NA, not a breed Ch, never shown. I should get freckels. Temperaments are superb, but I am breeding a bigger dog now. Stuns me:)

Is it normal or harmful for a 8-week old Peke puppy to have a soft spot on its head as a baby would have? Will it grow together as a baby's does? Itis not very large. My elderly friend has one with this and is very concerned about it. Any helpful info would be appreciated and passed along to her. Thanks much.

Amie's birthday is next Sunday but we decided to have her kids party this past weekend since so many people go out of town on the 4th. I was stupid enough to invite 7 little girls, all age 7-8 for a pizza party, cake & ice cream, then to the movies to see Rugrats Go Wild, then home for a slumber party. This was on Saturday. The girls decided they were going to stay up to watch the sun rise. Well at 4am I finally gave out and had to go to bed...after about 30 trips upstairs telling them to quiet down. The little buggers came downstairs at 5:20am, woke Scott up and asked him when breakfast would be ready! Then he got up at 6am, made a ton of pancakes, bacon & sausage for them and wouldn't you know that while he was cooking, every one of them passed out and COULD NOT be woken up. Two of them were sitting straight up sleeping LOL. All but 2 of them had to be carried out by their moms because they wouldn't wake up. Amie had an absolute blast and this will definitely go down as one of the best, if not THE best, birthday parties for her Now for the Boxer part...Ely was in puppy heaven with the girls this weekend. I'd swear that he thought they all came just to play with him. I kept having to physically remove him from the playroom because he just couldn't stay away. All those little kids with all their smelly sleeping bags and toys was just temptation overload for my little boy. He kept sneaking up the stairs and could be seen wiggling so hard he'd lose his balance, going from one little girl to the next, crawling into sleeping bags, giving kisses like there's no tomorrow, and just generally basking in the glory of children. I know Boxers are great with kids but he's the first one I've seen who acts like every child he sees is his long lost brother or sister. Hunter loved Amie to death but Ely has him and the rest beat. He doesn't mind them running, jumping, making loud noises. He just wants to be right there in the middle of it all. He does take breaks now and then to come play with Fancy and harrass her (he's been practicing his growl-talk since he first discovered he could do it about 2 weeks ago..he gets loud too), play tug games with her, nap with her and bite her legs only to then get growled at and go running back to Amie or any other child he can find. He's such a happy-go-lucky little social bug. He's now up to 23lbs, 19" tall (I believe, its been a week since I measured him) and 17 weeks. Covered in demodex too. Fancy loved the little girls too and was very wiggly but she's fairly reserved with kids. I don't know why she's that way. She'll eat up any child who comes to her ready to give attention but she doesn't actually go up to them to ask for it. She tends to stay about 3 feet away, watching hopefully to see if the child will come to her rather than just go up and shove her head under their hand like she does with adults. Tara

Hi All Just thought that I would give you an update on how Judy did after her trouble with the sedation and her eye. ) Its been a week since she has had it done, all tablets apart from the eye drops are finished, and its looking much better. Also normal now... We managed to get her to lose a "little" weight in the week. 21.2kg - 21kg, so hopefully this will help her heart out. (Think its working already, she was trying to run around the garden with her hair on her back up earlier. Something she hasnt done for a while) She has still got the cone on and the contact in, the Vet wants it on for a little longer just to be sure. Anyone has any experience in how the contact comes out after the cone comes off? Thank you for all your well wishes a week ago, I think they worked wonders. o) Donna & Judy Visit my pets @ www.geocities.com/sweetdreameruk21 Visit my site @ www.geocities.com/raindancer411 Remove SPAMBLOCK to reply )
