RE: "Don't touch my bone" page 22This is a discussion thread · 336 replies montana wildhack: [nq:2]you have rescue dogs which have all been abused.[/nq][nq:1]That could be part of the problem - that some of them actually have been. Although there is no difference in behavior towards them that have and them that haven't, so probably not.[/nq] Those abused dogs get a free pass for life and never have to have any rules. It's the law! And you have to be really proud that your dogs are a mess because they were abused. Oh, and don't pay any attention to those people who claim that they have worked with their dogs to get them over different issues. It's not possible! And any dog with any issues whatsoever was abused.

Sionnach: [nq:1]My dog that likes to hunt and kill stuff is probably just about as >safe as any dog is going to get around kids.[/nq]My dogs who hunt and kill are SAFER around kids than most; and as you know, my dog who adored small children and babies, and was incredibly gentle and careful with them, was also a very serious working hunting terrier.

Robin Nuttall: [nq:1]irresponsible[/nq][nq:2]to laud the merits of careful selection for working ability ... dismissing the merits of health testing out of the other.[/nq] [nq:1]never dismissed the merits of health testing. Pointed out that many of her dogs are. The whites might be health cleared before she imported them. If I was interested in buying one I would ask.[/nq] There are 509 listings in the OFA database for Giants with the Skansen prefix. Now mind you, that's not 509 dogs. It's probably fewer than 300 dogs. That sounds like a lot, but she's produced thousands of dogs during her time. She single-handedly altered the coat of the Giant from a harsh one to a soft one. And claims HD is caused by diet...

Robin Nuttall: [nq:2]At every turn, you have defended irresponsible breeding practices. None ... the merits if there are any of the original dogs she imported.[/nq][nq:1]I wonder if maybe Miniature Schnauzers (a top ten breed for 2006, with over 24,000 registered according to AKC) just has a derth of decent breeders.[/nq] Their health issues tend to be urinary plus PRA. Is your point that there are so few decent breeders that Sylvia is justified in pumping them out? In general I think it's a fairly healthy, long-lived breed.

And that may not be because all Miniature Schnauzer breeders are irresponsible, but simply that OFA isn't that useful for them. I don't see where they register for urinary disease. PRA is DXed by an ACVO vet and you get absolutely no more information by listing it with OFA.

Your contention seems to be that Sylvia can do-no-wrong. Since her chief claim to fame is producing oodles of Champions and you don't even like dogs that are bred just for show, I'm sort of boggled by this.

Sandy in OK: [nq:1]OFA has an agreement with CERF, and any CERFd dog is automatically listed in the OFA database, gratis.[/nq]But all the information you need comes from the original form. In fact, if I had a dog with punctate cataracts, while it would be noted on my original paperwork, my dog would CERF clear. [nq:1]Your contention seems to be that Sylvia can do-no-wrong. I don't try to tell other people what they should want. I don't know Sylvia, or if she does right or wrong. I'm suspecting nobody else here does either. But because she has a large kennel and breeds a lot of puppies, she must be a miller in the eyes of many, it seems. People who have a huge influence on their breed tend to be controversial. You love them or hate them. Since it is not my breed, I do neither.

Sandy in OK: Al is 50 on prey drive, 70 on pack drive. 23 on defense/flight and only15 on defense/fight. Though I've seen her be pretty bossy with steerswho out weigh her by several hundred pounds.
