dogsnus: [nq:2]And you know what someone said to me recently when ... the Bloat and that surgery? Why don't you just PHTS?[/nq][nq:1]After Rocky's epilepsy onset, my boss asked me when I was going to put him down. Not if*, but *when.[/nq] I got the same thing after Mojo's first surgery. The same person(s) saw a photograph of him in his glory on the day he had his staples removed and commented on how gorgeous and healthy he looked. I then informed them that this was the very dog they said I should PTS. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them squirm. Just because they're insensitive doesn't mean I am. Heh! Terri

dogsnus: But I'm not looking forward to Solo and Fly getting[nq:1]old at exactly the same time.[/nq] Been there once and will be so again. It really sucks. I need to plan things better in the future. Terri

But I sure know what the 2 of you mean in the above. Gwen

Dimpled Chad: [nq:2]I've been talking alot to people of late about Frankie's ... I've not had this type of reaction yet, thank goodness.[/nq][nq:1]That speaks well to your friends.[/nq] I tell them that, too. A lot of them are dog people, or if not are understanding... [nq:1]To be fair, I've only had one comment similar to what I related. On the other hand, there have been more than a few that are surprised at the amount of money I spend on his health.[/nq] Heh. I followed you too, btw. Yeah, I tend not to discuss this specific matter with people unless they ask. Sometimes, though, when people are thinking about getting a pet I try to talk to them about the ramifications of it, not just emotional but financial as well. Chad Looking for a pet? Yeah, I tend not to discuss this specific matter with people unless they ask. ... a pet I try to talk to them about the ramifications of it, not just emotional but financial as well.[/nq] I had a long, hard talk with Storm the Flat-Coat's breeder before we committed to a puppy. FCRs are prone to devastating cancer, and I've seen a few dogs who were kept going for their owners' sakes long after I would have put the dog down. I wanted to be clear with Storm's breeder that I would treat cancer with a good prognosis, but I would not put a dog through long (yes, expensive) rounds of surgery and chemo if the end result would be a sick, miserable, then shortly dead, dog. I didn't want to be put into a position where I would be under pressure from the breeder to provide that kind of treatment, and I didn't want her to place a dog with me if she disagreed. Storm's breeder is a vet, so I expected some argument when I put that out on the table - I expected her to advocate for treating everything at all treatable - but that wasn't the case at all. I think she's seen too many old dogs kept going too long. We all have to walk that line between helping the dog and incurring too much emotional and financial cost, and I'm comfortable that Sophia and I are on the same track when it comes to where that line may rest. I am also keenly aware that that line will become much blurrier and drift around distressingly when the actual time comes. It's so much easier to be crystal clear about these things when they are merely abstract ideas. When I consider what JQP would think of the annual vet bills for dogs who go to the vet because they are healthy and bouncing around ($ for the ear infections from swimming too much, *** for the sliced leg artery acquired while roaring around in the woods, *** for the abcessed foxtail, for the (*&^@! rolling in the dead @)(*! porcupine...), I am not looking forward to the old-dog-bills at all. Thank heavens most Canajuns are too well-trained to ask, "How much did that cost you?", because I don't want disapproval at my perceived over-spending on "just a dog" to colour what will be already difficult decisions.
