Jade :
I was sure that some people have a term 'friendly group' for good family dogs that are great with other pets... I'll do a search... 0)

[nq:1]My cats think the bathroom is the boardroom. Every time I go in there, they come rushing in, too, afraid they're going to miss something. :-) Laura[/nq]
My Great Dane puppy does this. Being in the Netherlands, there will soon come a time when she just won't fit in there, with or without me but knowing Danes, she'll try!

http://www.puppyfinder.com/selector/intro.dogThis selector allows you to factor in other pets, house size, yard size, time spent with dog, grooming, etc.

This one is great... first you determine what type of animal would suit you best, then you take a test as to which breed would suit you best!

This is a great site about actually introducing the puppy to the cats.

Anyway, I tried searching for 'friendly group' dogs, but couldn't find them. 0/
But I just KNOW I read it somewhere... sigh Must be getting senile!

Hope this helps,

[nq:1]Greetings, We have 3 cats (age 7), and are looking to get a dog. The cats have fullrun of the ... it serious consideration. However I am very concerned about finding a breed that will not be aggressive with the cats.[/nq]
This sounds very much like my 3 cats, although they are all girls. We got a dog late last year and were also concerned about integrating them all.

Even breeds that are "not aggressive" with small animals will want to play with cats if you get them as puppies. I highly recommend looking for an adult dog who is proven to get along well with cats. Then it's just a matter of waiting for the cats to come around.
We got a puppy, a rather large one, too. She outweighed the cats when she came home :-). The cats now have their own room as a safe haven, although they can still roam the house at will. The cats are the only thing in this world that the dog barks at. She wants to play, and the cats want to run.

But the situation is improving here. Understand that when you say the chemistry of your house will be thrown into chaos "for a while" you could be looking at many, many months, or even a few years.

Surprisingly, it is my 14-year-old prima donna cat (whom I've had longer than my husband) who is most likely to get along with the dog. They have been seen napping withing two feet of each other. I think it's because Princess (the feline) is so intent on getting to me for affection and petting that she ignores the dog, and if the cat ignores the dog, then the dog doesn't get quite so excited.
In any case, best of luck with the new household addition. Again, I recommend restricting your dog search to dogs who have been around cats (even as a puppy is better than nothing).
