How can I tell my cat is in heat? This is a discussion thread · 5 replies Anonymous: and is that something you always notice? I hope I will notice because my vet told me to get her sprayed after she's in heat for the first time. That's crazy! Why do you have to get her spayed AFTER heat? I've never heard of that and actually, it's better to do it before they ever go into heat. All my cats have been spayed and neutered BEFORE going into heat. Anonymous: I live in UAE and this is what my vet told me, that it is healthier to let the cat go in heat only once. Interesting, my vet in Bahrain told me the same thing back when I had my first cat and I lived there. However, in the meantime I learned that spraying a cat BEFORE she goes into her first heat phase will potentially reduce the risks of the animal developing mammary cancer in the future. Do this ESPECIALLY if your cat goes outside! That's very true and I forgot about that. Thank you for that reminder my friend! Vail Pet Talk: Spay and neuter your animals to decrease cancer risks The principal benefit of spaying female dogs and cats is the prevention of mammary cancer www.vaildaily.com/article/20120621/AE/120629980/1078&ParentProfile=1062 It's always best to spay before the cat goes into heat for the first time. There are people who think that if you let the cat go into heat once before you get them fixed or let them get pregnant before you fix them so they "know how it is to be a mother" is healthy for them but the fact is it will only make them stressed and its just best not to do it. Also if you let her go into heat and she marks and meows a lot while in heat that might not pass once you fix her you have to think if that's a risk you are willing to take. Anyways there are no health benefits to letting a cat go in heat once except making it stressed. | Have a question? People are waiting to help.
