RE: Incorrect Parentage page 2This is a discussion thread · 92 replies Melinda Shore: [nq:1]I know that I have to stop breeding, that is the problem. And I am worried about people calling me thinking that I did something wrong.[/nq]This morning I read a really interesting protracted discussion about being right and being wrong, and whether or not being right for the wrong reasons still counts as being right. I think it does, although it leaves the question of trustworthiness of judgment still open, it seems to me. Janet B: [nq:1]I know that I have to stop breeding, that is the problem. And I am worried about people calling me thinking that I did something wrong.[/nq]Even with the proper registration papers, do you really believe yourself to be an ethical and responsible breeder who has the best interest of the future of the breed? Suja: [nq:1]What are your dog's accomplishements? Herding? Agility titles? Obedience? Conformation?[/nq]It's a business, Tara. Sheesh, don't you know that having dogs with working reproductive organs is the only requirement for that? Suja

Tara: [nq:1]The mother has 3 champions in her line.[/nq]That is almost the same as "none". A line encompasses generations of dogs. In one "line", just going back to the dogs that would still be alive and well, this would span dozens and dozens of dogs. So, basically what you're saying is that your business is selling puppies from an untested dog, who's parents were both also untested. And your only gripe is that now they can't be registered? I have a lot more gripes with that situation than that, frankly. Given the problems that exist in Aussies, both physically and temperamentally, this is simply not responsible breeding. [nq:1]My dog is not in any competitions, just a beautiful well mannered dog.[/nq]That's great when it comes to a pet. Actually, that's one of the best characteristics there is for a pet. My dog is also a beautiful, well mannered dog (who will also be taking agility classes after we complete intermediate and advanced puppy classes). My dog is being trained to go anywhere, and be able to ahndle herself no matter what situations come up. I have high expectations of myself in terms of her training, and plan on taking her as far as she can go..knowing it will be only my own limitations that hold us back. But I would never* breed her. Because being sweet and cute is simply not enough. And being really well trained isn't even enough. Not when there are major genetically based illness that cripple and kill dogs. Not when there are temperament issues that don't always make themselves apparent in someone's house. When it comes to a dog you're breeding, being a beautiful dog and great pet falls FAR short of the mark. If your only criteria for breeding is a nice pet with a working uterus, then you are a Backyard Breeder. And that damages the breeds far more than any puppy mill will ever do. Hard to imagine, but true. You probably didn't mean to, but you did some damage by adding TONS of untested dogs to the gene pool. Not just the ones *you directly created, but the puppies you made that went on to also be bred as untested dogs. That's a genetic health problem time bomb..and owners down the line who have dogs that suffer from epilepsy, CHD, thyroid problems, cancer etc will be too busy crying their eyes out and making tough decisions about whether or not to go into hock (to treat problems you could have prevented), or to put their beloved pet to sleep (because of problems you could have prevented)..well, they'll be too busy doing all that to call you up and ream you personally for contributing to all that by not screening your dogs for these things before causing them to pass on their genes. [nq:1]We do not advertise them as being champions or anything like that. Its just that now I can not sell registered dogs.[/nq] You're going to hate this, but even though the reason is because you got scammed by the person you sold you your dog (and, yes, you got totally scammed by another irresponsible breeder), I'm really glad you can no longer sell untested, untitled, untrialed, **** Aussies as purebreed dogs. A really responsible, ethical and conscientous breeder would have sold you your dog on what's called a Limited Registration in the first place. Which means you wouldn't even have gotten your registration papers until you showed proof that you had her spayed. That's simply to protect the health and well being of the breed..something that your breeder and you either don't understand yet, or (even worse) don't care about. Only people truly dedicated to the health and well being of the dogs they produce and the breed should even think about breeding. Just loving the puppies and your dogs is great, but that's not even remotely what I'm talking about here. That's the first baby step, its not the journey. Its not about "champions", its about being a responsible breeder. Tara
