RE: Is there a best pet dog competition and breeders? page 9This is a discussion thread · 111 replies Suja: [nq:1]Social or just friendly? For instance, I'm not so much into extremely social dogs. I like friendly dogs but dislike ... little - that are willing to be petted by strangers if they really want to but who don't require that.[/nq]You and me both. I prefer an indifferent dog to an overly friendly one who is fawning all over me. And unless Scott has lots of dog loving friends, I think that a dog that is happy to get a pat or two but won't pester his guests for it constantly would be a better fit. I think that I have said before that family and friends who either don't like dogs or are afraid of them are almost uniformally okay with Khan (once they get over his looks and size), less so with Pan. He's happy to live and let live, but she insists on checking people out, although she is nowhere near as pushy as your typical "friendly" dog. [nq:1]This probably eliminates most smaller breeds. And some types of coats.[/nq] This is certainly not recommended, but my brother's Boston has gone on some decent hikes with us. That one is like the energizer bunny, and always willing to play. She's a great little dog and I'm really looking forward to having them over for Thanksgiving. [nq:1]I can certainly picture a beagle or a Jack Russell taking a pretty goodshot at it.[/nq] Precisely. And every single one I met was an incredibly miserable little dog - toward humans and dogs alike. I finally, this past summer, met a great little Boston. And a rescue, as it happens. She (he? can't remember) was outgoing and friendly, settling in rather easily to her new home within just a couple of days. There was a dietary problem - which is probably why she ended up in rescue - but they were hopeful they could handle it and from all appearances it was going to be a great match. I'm not looking to get one - but that one would have been difficult to turn away at the door. ~~Judy

KWBrown: [nq:1]If I were more into the clipping side of grooming, I'd definitely consider a Standard. However...I enjoy the brushing side of grooming way more!![/nq]If I could find better field poodles, I'd put one on the list - but the pool of working poodles is pretty small, although there are outstanding specimens out there. A hunt test prospect from a really nice kennel should be coming into our area this summer, and I'm looking forward to watching it grow up on the circuit. A Mini is on my list of "too old to be messing around in the swamp anymore" dogs, along with the hypothetical Pug With A Little Nose. Kate and Storm and Hamish the FCRs

KWBrown: @corp.supernews.com:[nq:2]God, every breed has them, doesn't it?[/nq] [nq:1]Not so much in Belgian Sheepdogs...heh, it's black or nothing.[/nq] I've not met a FCR breeder who is focussed on liver, although there are a few, who, given an otherwise identical choice, might care whether the dog carries a liver gene or not. I am amused, however, by the occasional drop-in on the FCR list who says, "hey, if you ever get a reject yellow puppy, I'd love to take it!" Yellows happen, but those folks might be better off, and have more variety available, if they just went and got a field-bred Golden. By the time someone is deliberately hunting a yellow FCR, I suspect that the double novelty factor is driving way too many of the dog selection factors. Kate and Storm and Hamish the FCRs

KWBrown: @corp.supernews.com:[nq:1]Oh yeah...try training a puppy for ring gaiting when the wind is blowing leaves by. Ha.[/nq] I'll see you your wind and leaves and add rain... / What a goof. There are actually a few nice photos in that set, BTW. He's growing up into a Fine Dawg. Kate and Storm and Hamish the FCRs

Wouldn't have thought anything of it, except it looks odd in comparison with the other pups. It would be nice if someone followed up and showed what it looks like when it gets a little older. [nq:1]I hear they're asking $6500 for it.[/nq] Wouldn't be surprised. Did you also know that it is hypoallergenic and doesn't shed? Probably walks on water too. Suja
