Anonymous: [nq:2]That's a good idea. Even if the cats go in the bedroom, they're not too likely to go into her crate to drink her water.[/nq][nq:1]heh. hopefully, they aren't that dumb.[/nq] I dunno - our cats occasionally venture into a dog crate. Years ago Dolce got herself washed so thoroughly by Tasha that her fur was all icky and spiky. I'd warned her not to go into Tasha's crate, but did she listen? << Heh, the kittens, when they were kittens, used to go into Wojo's crate and take his chicken wings. (This was when I was feeding raw.) Now, Abby goes into Trip's crate when I'm dishing up the kibble, hoping she can beat him to any pieces that fall into his crate. Beth

Paula: [nq:1]I guess Matt that for me submission is an emotive term. I dont like meekness- I want a confident obedient dog. I think its possible.[/nq]Dogs don't see things the same way. They are actually more comfortable with clear leadership. Their relationships are hierarchical by nature, so having a hierarchy is not only not distressing, but makes sense to them. They want to know what their position is, which to them means who they look to for guidance on what to do and not to do and who they look to tell what to do and not to do. If you don't lead, they won't co-lead in some happy go lucky no one makes anyone submit to anything relationship, they will try to take charge.OTOH, submission doesn't mean harshness or dominance. It just means following what someone else wants from me instead of what I want in the moment. I don't particularly want to spend so much of my money on gifts for my kids, but, you know, the relationship we have and the excitement in their eyes on Christmas is worth more to me than spending all my money on myself. Give your dog a good relationship with you and it will gladly submit. You don't have to beat it into submission, but you do need to be clear on who makes the rules for your household and that it isn't the dog, or neither of you will be happy. Paula: [nq:1]don't have to guess.[/nq]EXACTLY!!! This is the number one factor I have found to confident happy dogs in my household. If they know what is expected of them and don't have to guess what their role is or how things work in your house, they are happy and confident. If they have to constantly guess what they are supposed to be doing or not supposed to be doing and what may or may not make you happy, they are not happy or confident. Who wants to constantly be trying to figure out what the person who controls everything that matters to you wants from you? Paula: [nq:1](though I guess I'd have to put[/nq][nq:2]a Living in a house divided is seriously stressful. Make ... rescue contact now, and make her aware of the situation.[/nq] [nq:1]The division would be a matter of last resort when I have accepted that I've failed and they cannot get on.[/nq] A screen door will not keep them separated if they don't get along. Even a relatively small dog can rip through a screen really easily. If you have failed and they cannot get along, you will need a better plan.
