I am debating between a male or female pitbull. I am not sure what the normal personality traits of each sex are. If anyone can direct me to the advantages and disadvantages, I would appreciate it.

Regards,
Ian

Advantages and Disavantages?
Depends on their background and the training you provide.I love both male and female pitbulls, they are not really very different...

in my experience, both males and females have great personalities. your main concern would be whether you have another dog, and if so, what sex is it. pit bulls are more likely to get along with another dog of the opposite sex, so keep that in mind when picking your pup.
good luck, and post pix!

Do you not find the females are generally easier to handle?

i know the question wasn't directed at me but...
of the pit bulls i've known, i'd say that the males were slightly calmer, if anything. but it varies more from dog to dog than it does by sex.

I really wouldn't say so, some of my females are just as, how do I say it gently pitbullish and do the heat thing also which I would see as a small area of concern or inconvenient because I do not sterilize my dogs..Thats why I would say the dogs breeding and pedigree would determine qualities far more reliable than sex generalization, while not knowing anything about where the dogs he wants come from...Some breed familys of pitbulls may have females that are easier to handle and or train but I would not make that generalization with the pure bred APBTs that I deal with...

Actually, I grew up believing that wives tale. In my experience girls are harder to train and harder to manage than boys. They dont' call them bitches for nothing.
My boys are kind of dopey dorks, they go along with what I want because they are dopey dorks. A female samoyed in my house is a whole nother can of worms. Bossy things!

My direct experience with a number of larger dogs has led me to think females are generally a bit calmer and more tractable. But, this is merely an impression, not a thoughtful opinon.

I prefer females, because males can tend to mark (any breed). Not that they all do, but I've seen enough of them (even neutered) who do it to give me a preference. In my last pack of 3 boys, one of them continued to mark in the house occasionally even though he was neutered young.

Other than that, I don't really see a difference between males and females. Two females are more likely to fight to the death than two males. In general. But the differences between males and females in dogs is minute compared to the differences between individual dogs.
