RE: Need parrot information page 4This is a discussion thread · 46 replies Phil Jarvis: [nq:1]You might like an English budgie. They are a bit more laid back than normal budgies, mine loves interaction, ... he talks much less now that he has a budgie buddy. However, he's smaller than a parrolet, afaik. Becky[/nq]That's about the third plug for budgies, I'll take a closer look, even though they are a bit small. Thanks.

Phil Jarvis: [nq:2]Well, it was an ... unexpected ... bunch of replies. ... the quiet side, and quakers are ... personality with feathers.[/nq][nq:1]You may want to check into the other poicephalus parrots such as the Meyer's parrot.[/nq] I had another person suggest that too. What do you feel is the distinguishing characteristic behind that (your) recommendation? [nq:2]Other than that, I'm still open to hearing about quieter ... personality, and leaning towards speech, if you have any advice.[/nq] [nq:1]How about a pionus? They're relatively quiet, but I don't think that they talk much.[/nq] I haven't been able to learn much about or meet these birds yet. What makes you suggest them? [nq:1]Expecting speech usually isn't a good idea. You may get a bird that just won't shut up or you may get a species known for talking and it won't say a thing.[/nq] No guarantees with anything, understood. Still, I can't help but have my heart melted when I hear some of the things said by the quaker's I've seen. So if I'm really into the speach, I'll try to accomodate birds more likely to do it (which may mean accomodating fundamentally more noisy birds). It's just one factor though in the consideration of an avian companion though, and by no means the reason for obtaining one. Thank for the input.

good golly miss Molly: Bear in mind that there are no guarantees that any bird will talk. I have gcc here which talk up a storm, and an african grey which doesn't say a word but who whistles tunes.

Kimberlee: Is this because if you teach them tunes they're less likely to talk? With our birds, we never taught them to whistle until they talked. Then they had a blast: Whilstle the tune to Popeye, "Hello, Quincy!" Whilstle the tune to Looney Tunes.~Kimberlee

good golly miss Molly: [nq:1]Is this because if you teach them tunes they're less likely to talk?[/nq]Nope, that is a fallacy. Cuppy among others learned to wolf whistle first, he now has a huge vocab'. Piper simply doesn't talk. He whistles tunes, imitates a cat and the phone beeping if it gets knocked off the hook, he simply doesn't talk. I don't mind I like his rendition of 'Colonel bogey' :0)

John C: [nq:2]Is this because if you teach them tunes they're less likely to talk?[/nq]. I don't [nq:1]mind I like his rendition of 'Colonel bogey' :0)[/nq] Isn't that an old Pink Floyd tune from one of their first two albums? The psychedelic era, I believe. Now I wonder just what is Old Molly putting in them pellets she feeds to her fids.
