On the same thread as the gnawingThis is a discussion thread · 3 replies i'll teach you to turn away.: has anyone else noticed that a snake will immediately calm down after striking you?perhaps it's just me & the long list of very easily personificated* snakes i've owned, but whenever braeden's bitten me, it's usually been before i even got my hand in his tank for him to sniff at, & he's ALWAYS relaxed immediately thereafter. it's like the taste of my blood on his teeth makes him go, "OHH, ***. i should NOT have done that. dude, sorry." anyone else? or do your snakes strike & then stay on guard, as i would expect any non-HUMAN snake to act? (*no, it's not a word. but it should be. it's fun to say aloud.) lish "you were nothing (Email Removed) but a brief distraction." -ftf

Jim Smith: I haven't had that experience. I've had Dumeril Boas that would continuously strike at me. Drawing blood each time I might add!!! One female was nasty. She would bite anything that came near her. The only way to pick her up was to feed her 2 jumbo rats. Once she was full, she would calm down.A few kingksnakes also come to mind as well. However they would want to latch on to me and gnaw for as long as I would allow. But they would try it again as soon as I got them to release their first bite. Never had a cornsnake strike at me without it being my fault (Having mice scent on my hands and reaching in to pick them up.) I also got tagged by a Retic a few years ago. That freak wouldn't let go for anything. That one scared me...after we got him to release his bite, he went after my friend (the one that helped get him off on my hand/arm). However all he got was my friend's shirt sleeve. Maybe it's just my bad luck!!! Jim Smith Blaming the gun for murder, is like blaming the car for hit and run!

Zetekitoxin: [nq:1]has anyone else noticed that a snake will immediately calm down after striking you?[/nq]I've noticed 2 different reactions. One is: "Oh. Sorry. Thought you were food. I'll be going now." with a quick release. The other reaction is more: "Evil hand! I will bite you and constrict you until you die! die! die!" I find that snakes that I handle regularly and that I would consider 'friendly' tend to be the first type of biter. Snakes that are not handled regularly and are always strikey/ hissy tend to be the second type of biter. Makes sense. One is a feeding response, the other defensive. Or at least, that's the way it has always seemed to me. -Z

Grainne Gillespie: [nq:1]has anyone else noticed that a snake will immediately calm >down after striking you?[/nq]Jool was still upset after she bit me and the snake that bit me in The Reptile Haven...talk about a *** off ***! A guy was holding her and I had reached out to pet her and she saw my hand coming. After she bit me she started striking at thin air. Then she started striking in the direction of the guy's face, she was aiming for his hair. She didn't stay out of her tank too long after she started that! One time when I was at The Reptile Haven, Ben opened a snake's tank to feed it. The snake was waiting. It lunged out of the tank, snagged the rodent out of Ben's hand and then landed on the floor, lunch held firmly in it's jaws
