Hi we're about to get a cat but we need it to have very patient and calm temperament because we have two kids, 3 and 5 years old. Any breed suggestions please? Should we get a male or female for that matter?
I have a Maine Coon and he's very laid back. Those and Ragamuffins and Ragdolls. All very laid back and patient breeds. Very sweet too!

I agree with alfinnlay. Persians, British Shorthairs and Scottish Folds are usually good with kids, too.

What you'll also need to do is to teach your kids to treat the cat with respect. Cats can be very patient, especially if it's a patient cat, but happy co-living doesn't solely depends on the cat's good behaviour and temperament. Emotion: smile

I think males tend to be more laid back then females, if they're neutered. Also please consider adopting an older cat - they will have outgrown the stages they go through in the first couple of years of life where they can feel the need to attack anything that moves, and they have lots of love to offer!
We published a page about docile cat breeds today, you may want to check it out. Emotion: smile

I had persians, siamese and maine coons, persian was the least patient in my case.

I have an older cat that I've picked up from the streets. From the posts here, I think he's a British Longhair - or Shorthair (though I can't really be sure myself so we've registered him as a DLH). Pics here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.496045097611.275592.613732611&type=3

He's really sweet, not that vocal but can be persuasive when he wants to take his evening walks.
