Please help befriend two male cats

A friend of mine asked to take care of her male cat while she's away for two weeks. We agreed as we were living in an apartment with no other animals at that moment. About 2 months have passed and the cat's owner hasn't shown up so far... circumstances made us move to my grandma's apartment, and the problem begins here. She already has a 17 year old male tabby who didn't want to accept the newcomer! The young cat displayed submissiveness but it didn't satisfy the old one. Emotion: sad

We thought it might be troublesome to befriend them but I didn't expect SUCH a reaction. We keep the young one in a separate room now, but the old cat sits at its door almost 24/7, cries with a dramatic voice and demands a new meeting to deal with the stranger. What can we do??

No they are not neutered. Does it matter that much? I don't think it makes sense to neuter a 17 year old cat...
