[nq:1] 'Actually training dogs'? Last I knew you were instructing ... Leah. You teach the most basic of pet classes according to your very own descriptions. Dog trainers train dogs.[/nq]
Actually, most dog trainers train people to train dogs. A few people train other people's dogs.

Debbie S:
I disagree. Dog trainers train dogs. Instructors train people. Some obedience, agility, herding, etc. instructors are also dog trainers.

I would think the distinction isn't all that clear - many do both.

[nq:1] Precisely. If Leah stopped doing exactly that, she'd never hear from me.[/nq]
Melinda's probably referring to me, too.

Well, I have strayed into realms of which I apparently know little.

Leah:
[nq:1] Real trainers, sure. Ones that actually know their limitations and stay within the parameters of their skill set even better.[/nq]
I'm not a real trainer? Let's see... I make my living training dogs, I get paid for training dogs... perhaps you need to define the word "real?"

Oh, that's right. We're picking nits.
I'm a dog-owner trainer.
Funny that I've never heard any other class instructors who call themselves "dog trainers" make that particular distinction.
As for "staying within my parameters," you be sure to yell at me the next time I give a retrieving class. Or teach agility. Or take on a dog who has a history of biting people and causing injury.
[nq:1]Last 4 years of going to classes and seminars? Aren't you the person that missed the APDT gathering in her ... Now you're saying you've been going to seminars, workshops and classes for 4 years? So which story is the truth?[/nq]
Both. My first year of interest, I attended classes with Madigan. For the second year, this was pretty much my only resource. Since then, I have had some more education. Not anywhere near as much a I'd like, but I can honestly say I've been attending workshops, seminars and classes.
[nq:1]'Actually training dogs'? Last I knew you were instructing entry level basic manners classes for owners with no training experience. ... Leah. You teach the most basic of pet classes according to your very own descriptions. Dog trainers train dogs.[/nq]
Right, that dog-owner trainer thing. Must remember to write a memo to other class instructors informing them that Debbie said they can no longer refer to themselves as dog trainers.
Yes, I teach basic family dog manners. You say it like it's something dirty. I happen to think that any dog's most important job is to be a beloved member of the family. Higher level training is icing on the cake.

Besides, I've only been teaching for 2 years. You want I should be teaching advanced classes? I'll get there.
Meanwhile, as a basic dog trainer - oops, dog-owner trainer - I know enough to intelligently answer most common family dog problems.

Like... why won't he eat dry food when he's getting chicken.

I don't think there's really too much experience required to answer that one, actually.
[nq:1] Giving the ... knowledge would be demonstrated by knowing which caveats are appropriate for the situation, and giving them along with the advice.[/nq]
Like, the dog might be anorexic? The puppy who has been devouring chicken for two days has an eating disorder?
He may also have an alien growing inside of him. You never know.
[nq:1]Ever see the bumper sticker "Please don't tell my mother I'm a dog trainer, she thinks I play the piano ... known as a 'dog trainer'. It's not the most chic profession in the world. Hell, it's not even clean work.[/nq]
I'm not interested in being "chic" or "clean." I'm interested in doing something with my life that I can thoroughly enjoy, and hopefully meanwhile help people learn how to better communicate with their dogs so that they have a better chance of keeping a forever home.
I love what I do.

Haven't seen that one. One of my favorite tshirts is one from a Clean Run camp:
*I** am the instructor. **YOU* are the trainer.
See, an instructor is not a trainer. An instructor teaches another human being HOW to train their canine companion. Leah isn't a dog trainer of any dogs other than her own if she's doing it right (and I think we know the answer to that). She teaches basic pet classes. She does not train dogs.

I teach several levels of agility, from basic to advanced. I certainly don't feel like I know everything or have finished learning, and I've been training my own dogs for 20 years and teaching others for a good part of that time including a period of time when frankly I didn't have clue one what I was really doing and probably shouldn't have been teaching.

I TRAIN my own dogs. I am not a professional dog trainer. Generally, professional dog TRAINERS are those who take in dogs and train them. Such as field trainers, stockdog trainers, schutzhund trainers. They take dogs in, train them, then turn them back over to the owner. Those are dog trainers. Leah is not.
