We have an Abyssinian cat Sue that is hyper active like all Abbies. She is now living with my sister because we're renting a flat with leather furniture and expensive wall papers, and we know Sue will scratch them for sure. What if we clip her nails regularly, will it help save the furniture? Basically, how much destruction can a cat with clipped nails cause? I miss Sue so much and I want to take her back but I realize I cannot until we do something about this problem.

From my experience clipping nails won't help much if the cat purposely scratches the furniture but not just walks over it. What we've done is covering our couch with a blanket. Does she has a cat tree to scratch? I think she'll need several ones... Is she neutered?

Janis is right, clipping nails wont help but There are a few things you can do instead of covering your poor furniture.. one thing is like Janis mentioned getting her a scratching post, if she likes scratching the sides of the furniture, get her a vertical scratching post, if she likes scratching surfaces get her a horizontal one.. if she likes both just get her one that will provide both horizontal and vertical scratching spaces (there is a kind that comes with a round surface with a post in the middle, providing her with both options) if you can afford it even get her a cat tree, this will not only help with the scratching but will provide her with climbing and playing areas and this can solve a lot of other behavior problems she may have (or even just help drain her energy) . place this next to the area she usually likes to scratch and every time you catch her scratching re correct her and encourage her to use the post, it is important not to get angry or scold her because that will only make it worse, give her treats when she uses the post to encourage her to use it.

if that doesn't work I also recommend nail caps, this is a wonderful painless replacement to cruel ed-clawing and you don't need to clip her nails every week plus this will completely prevent her from scratching (she will probably still try to scratch but this is only natural and 0 damage will be caused anyways). nail caps are basically little silicone caps that you glue on her nails after clipping them, usually the first time she will take them off pretty quickly but once she gets used to them they can last her up to 6 weeks! and her nails simply grow inside the caps until they fall off and you replace them again. if she goes outdoor just put caps on her front legs and leave her back legs without them so she can climb, most of the damage is made by the front legs anyways. it should be really easy to put them on for her at home with a help of another person but if you really can't get them on there are vets and groomers that can do it for you. i would just suggest if you want them don't buy them at the pet shop because they cost 22$ for a pack of 20 while you can get 40 of them for 2 bucks on ebay, so if you do get them get them from ebay.
