Chris, I don't know how close Ontario (the one in California) is to your area, but an all-breed UKC weight pull will be held there in just a couple of weeks- on October 18 and 19. The listing on the web page says you can get a temporary listing number (necessary for entry) at the event, so evidently you can sign up on the day.
$22 to enter on the day of the event, $17 if you enter in advance.

See http://ukcdogs.com/dogevents/upcoming/i-per.shtml for details; you have to scroll way down the page, because the '03 events are listed AFTER the '04 ones for some dumb reason. Events are listed by weekend, then by state within a particular weekend.
