The conference is summoned to discuss pressing problems of protection and welfare of farm, companion and wild animals, including animals in zoological gardens and experimental animals.
It is addressed to governmental authorities, breeders, veterinarians, scientists, teachers, private sector and non-profit NGOs and anybody who is interested in animal protection and welfare.
The conference is hosted by the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Brno, Czech Republic.

The 11th International Animal Rights Day (IARD) will take place on 10th December 2008.

The Universal Declaration of Animal Rights - that animals have a right to life free from deliberately inflicted pain, suffering, exploitation and death - has been signed by large and small organisations representing hundreds of thousands of people in: the UK, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.

International World Vegan Day - 1 November 2008

Veganism is a diet and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.

Vegans endeavor not to use or consume animal products of any kind. The most common reasons for becoming a vegan are ethical commitment or moral convictions concerning animal rights, the environment, human health, and spiritual or religious concerns. Of particular concern are the practices involved in factory farming and animal testing, and the intensive use of land and other resources required for animal farming.

Various polls have reported vegans to be between 0.2% and 1.3% of the U.S. population, and between 0.25% and 0.4% of the UK population.

Vegan diets (sometimes called strict or pure vegetarian diets) are a subset of vegetarian diets, which are credited with lowering the risk of colon cancer, heart attack, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, and stroke. Properly planned vegan diets are healthful and have been found to satisfy nutritional needs. However, poorly planned vegan diets can be low in levels of calcium, iodine, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Vegans are therefore encouraged to plan their diet and take dietary supplements as appropriate. (wiki)

Sunday, 1st October is World Vegetarian Day.

Recognizing and celebrating World Vegetarian Day and Vegetarian Awareness Month is a fun way to help others learn about the benefits of vegetarianism, which include:

â¢	reducing the risk of major killers like heart disease, stroke and cancers while cutting exposure to food borne pathogens;
â¢	offering a viable answer to feeding the world's hungry, through more efficient use of grains and other crops;
â¢	saving animals from suffering in factory farm conditions and from painful slaughter;
â¢	conserving vital, but limited freshwater, fertile topsoil and other precious resources;
â¢	preserving irreplaceable ecosystems, such as rainforests and other wildlife habitats;

Sunday, August 24, 1 to 4 pm at the Bronx Library Center in New York.

Learn how to care for the feral and stray cats in your community and make use of the many resources now available to assist you. All steps in setting up a managed colony will be covered, including establishing good community relations, feeding, building and placing shelters, arranging vet care, finding recovery space, safely handling feral cats, and trapping (with an emphasis on conducting a mass-trapping of an entire feral colony at once).

All workshop attendees will become TNR certified, and NYC residents will gain access to free spay/neuter and trap rental. Join the 1,500+ caretakers trained to date! Advance registration is required, but there is no fee for the Aug. 24 workshop.

Feeding Pets of the Homeless is a nonprofit member organization that provides pet food and veterinarian care to the homeless and less fortunate in local communities across the United States and Canada. Headquarters are in Carson City, Nevada.
Socially responsible veterinarian hospitals and clinics around the country are collecting pet food from their clients and are partnering with local food banks who then distributes the pet food to the homeless and disadvantaged. Yep such a creature exists! Eclyse is her name and according to the dailymail she was a "holiday accident" Her mother, a horse, was taken from her safari park to a ranch in Italy where she had a little romance with a Zebra called Ulysses. Soon after, she was born!
