Physical characteristics

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a working hound with a large and powerful appearance. These dogs are robust and hardy. The head resembles a Bloodhound, because it has alike long hanging ears, large black nose, and long dropping lips. The eyes are round, and either hazel or dark brown. The typical weight of Coonhounds is 80-90 pounds for males, and 65-75 pounds for females. The height ranges from 23 to 27 inches (females tend to be smaller).

Temperament

Coonhounds are very intelligent dogs dedicated to their work. There are different opinions about their temperament and character: some say that Coonhounds are rather aggressive but will, nonetheless, obey their master, while the others say Coonhounds are gentle dogs that are friendly with strange people. In any case, it is clear that some individuals can be very protective and wilful. These dogs do require patient training and firm human leadership. They have a very good sense of smell and may run after an interesting scent all of a sudden, so you had better not let your Coonhound off the leash in a dangerous area. Just like the Siberian Husky, Coonhounds prefer howling to barking. They may not like non-canine pets. Due to their working personality, Coonhounds are not recommended for keeping in an apartment. Socialize your dog at an early age.

Coat and grooming

The coat is pretty short and sleek, so it requires little grooming. Shedding is pretty little.

Health

The Black and Tan Coonhound is prone to hip dysplasia and ear infections. You should check the ears once a week in order to keep them clean.
