My girlfriend and I put a pond (about 1,000 gallons) in our backyard about a month ago, and we have Koi and some bluegills in it. Today, I found (near some woods) a 3 striped mud turtle that is about 4 inches long. After putting the turtle in the pond, I did some research and found that these type of turtles may eat fish. Some of the fish in our pond are about 3 inches long. I'm not worried about losing the bluegill, but I really don't want the Koi to get eaten. Does anybody have any experience with this type of turtle mixed with fish? Also, what should I feed this turtle?
Thanks,
Barry

If the turtles can get to the pond and you have something they can eat they will find it any way

Fish. Koi make an excellent staple diet.

Perhaps you could offer some small minnows, rosie reds, or guppies (would they live in a pond?) I think that the turtles, being around the same size of the Koi, would go after smaller pray. Of course, ALL the fish could get munched eventually.. but my mud turtle is a bottom feeder, and kinda lazy. He hates chasing fish. Perhaps you could offer some sinking turtle food when you feed your koi to keep the turtles well fed.. this would also keep the turtles away from your fish, but at the same time how eithical is it to feed the wild turtles? hmm. Well, good luck with the turtles! (And Koi!)
"Andee" how eithical is it to feed the wild turtles? hmm.
Is it still wild if it stays in his backyard pond?

"Andee" how eithical is it to feed the wild turtles? hmm. Ethics are not relevant. Food is food, no matter WHAT eats is. Once it hits the water, it's out of Andee's hands, so to speak. No responsibility to the turtle. Now if he removed the turtle, He'd have specific responsibilities that involved thought and choice.

He has already chosen to remove the turtle during feeding time. Now, feed him seperate, or release back to the pond?
OR
Look how little he is, and just an extra handful at fish feeding time will take care of it.
IF
It's actually scavaging off the bottom and not eating fish that cost more than feeder fish.
So, keep the turtle forever, or get rid of it now, or a variation on that theme.
But as far as ethics, How ethical is it to feed the ducks? When your 5 years old? My choice would go down to the pond and practice my curveball.
Is it still wild if it stays in his backyard pond? Yes. No.

The word 'wild' is a relative term. lt loses meaning.
