It's got to be a male, he sings CONSTANTLY. Amazingly loud considering he normally sings under water. I can only assume he's the loneliest frog in the whole house. The song is different from day to night, too... and the night song is like a smooth continuous trill that puts you right to sleep.

He's finally settled in and acting like a not-insane frog. He's got 15 gallons of water all to himself and a nice big underwater hide in the center. I bought him a nice new submersible Duetto 3-in-1 filter and a sweet fully submersible Ebo Jager heater. The gravel is sloped so he can stand with his nose out of the water on one side. I do need to rig a better lid, I caught my cat sitting on the edge of the laundry basked with her paw over the edge of the tank the other day. That could have been traumatic!

His breakfast time antics are hilarious... he uses his hands to make sure every bit of his Reptomin is shoved in his mouth! I'm going to try some bugs in the water later this week. I offered him brine shrimp but he wasn't interested. Too small, maybe.
I think I'd really like to have a second one of these frogs, but I couldn't possibly get a little one to house with him. It would have to be a BIG girl. It would be fun to see them in amplexus... heh.
Anyone know where I can obtain an adult female african clawed frog?

"Pipa Pipa – Suriname Toad
The World's Flattest Frog. Froglets hatch out of it's back! These frogs also known as the star fingered toad."
simply awesome. they have them on that xenopus site. this is the frog that imbeds it eggs in its back and when they hatch they pop out like bees in honey comb, leaving the back of the frog all full of holes. only 65 buckers on that site.

We have one for the frog exhibit. He is cool, although I was always creeped out by them before. He elicits more gasps than any of the other frog species that we have!
I am learning that they need HIGH amounts of chemical filtration though. The filter I had planned on using is simply not large enough to handle the amount of wastes this frog produces. Had to set up a larger filter. I have been testing the water daily and am learning more about nitrates and PH levels than I ever thought I know. I have never been a big fish person, aquatics are a weakness of mine.

I've been studying water cycling and aquatic stuff hard, too. I've got a product recommendation for your aquatic frogs. It's called Cycle; it's a bunch of beneficial bacteria that nitrify ammonia and nitrates fast and keep your water cycle quick and smooth. A little goes a long way and I've had excellent results rapidly maturing aquariums with it. I use it at water change time and any time I'm adding new fish or frogs.

I'm way into the whole beneficial bacteria thing... for me, my mammals, my herps, and now my fish and aquatic amphibians too. Emotion: smile

Here is is on Foster-Smith's site:

I have two other aquariums for fish... one brackish for my little platies, mollies and swordtails, and a 2 gallon setup for my betta (thanks cat!) so I'd like to keep my frog seperate. Plus, he kicked the CRAP out of my betta when I had them together for the first weekend he was here, granted the tank was way too small but I wouldn't want him hurting other fish.

AND... I want to watch amplexus. I'm naughty that way. Emotion: smile
