So the description says to completely ignore her when she solicits attention. Don't pet her, don't push her away, don't tell her to back off.. Well, this is hard with a Dane. I DID it, though. There I was on the couch sewing up a hole in my pants leg (Walter in the playpen watching Baby Beethoven and "talking" to his dragon), and Saskia ambled up and started smelling my nose in a friendly manner. Then she set her chin on my knee and inched her head farther and father into my lap, going, "Brreep?" over and over.

Then she rested her lips where the thread entered the fabric and her eyes tracked the needle up and down, up and down. Then she rested her foot on my knee, and went, "Mroof..." She kept rolling her eyes up to look at my face. It was extremely difficult not to accidentally poke her with the needle or burst out laughing. Eventually she sighed and went off to bug the cat.

Cute story!
Sometimes when Zoe solicits attention, I will have her follow a command (usually sit, down, or shake hands) and then indulge her. I don't think you always have to ignore the solicitation, just show that it is your decision whether/when to grant it. JMO.

What you may do as a general rule isdifferent from what you should do when you are problem solving. Sometimes the situation requires more structure.

I'm sure we'll work up to that, but as I read the situation, we need to be firm and consistent right now, and get her used to the whole thing.

Aaargh, now I have problems with my husband abut the whole thing!! I just can't catch a break. He's agreed to follow the plan as stated, IF Saskia can have her toys (one or two of them) at night and when we aren't home, but now he's in a REALLY pissy mood, and feels that we're now going to make everything worse. So if anything DOES happen again he'll feel he gets to say "I told you so" about all this! AArgh!

That's a very good point.

You've been around this group a long time. I'm surprised that you haven't read about NILIF.

In fairness, there seem to be about 8 different versions of NILIF floating around here. I think that "real" NILIF probably is kind of close to Jan Fennel's dreck (she goes way astray, I think, in her analysis, but not always in the mechanical aspects of her suggested remedies).
