And you can even see her hair being swept back by that force when she takes off, too.

Movies work because of the suspension of disbelief. As a veteran image manipulator, I no longer take "you can even ... I can make whatever image I want and I can edit it pixel by pixel so it is perfectly seamless.

I applaud your abilities, Montana, but I never suspend my disbelief. For example, not for one second did I believe that Drew Barrymore was actually riding her bicycle (and E.T.) over the moon. Not once!

I swear!
And even if the person who made that film swore to me on whatever people swear on, I still wouldn't believe him or her.

Aah. A fellow skeptic. I like that!
But the Granny film clip seemed possible to me.
E.T. didn't.
I've worked with Photoshop and other programs since they were first offered. It has jaded me considerably.

Yeah, me too. We just witnessed a good example of that, too, with all those "faux" shots coming out of Lebanon. Supposedly, even Reuters and AP were duped, but I think they just saw what they wanted to see.
But I simply find it impossible to believe that a Granny of that size could fly in the manner depicted in that film.

Yabbut, maybe it ain't a Granny, but a burly 25 year old water skier, for example?
Maybe we should submit it to the Mythbusters to investigate. It would be right up their alley. And it would make darned entertaining (and informative) tv.

Heh.
I agree!

If all the things that are possible in that video are true, then using your scenario, why don't people "fly" behind those cigarette boats, which surely have more horsepower than a Great Dane (even chasing a squirrel)?

Trust me, Montana, give a cigarette boat a running start (like the one the Great Dane got), and you'll see some flying going on!

And it won't be a pretty sight...

I have, plus I have waterskiing family members with really fast boats whom I have watched for years (it's not my thing). None of them flew, although they complained about the feeling that their arms were being ripped out of their sockets. They all still have arms.

And a flexi-leash handle is not a tow rope handle.

But it's nice that you believe in flying "Grannies" and since that is your belief, I'll not say more.

That's because none of them were dumb enough to try to ski behind a cigarette boat with a running start(!), and for that you should be very thankful.
Hey, I was just thinking, and I know that's always dangerous in my case, but what if the "leash" was really bungee cord?

That should even make it easier to "fly," eh?
although they complained about the feeling that their arms were being ripped out of their sockets. They all still have arms.

I've never seen anyone "fly" from being pulled out of the water (too much resistance from the water), but I've seen them almost "fly" when they were pulled from sitting on a boat dock.
And a flexi-leash handle is not a tow rope handle.

Actually, if you look close, you can see that Granny *is* hanging on with both hands to something, but we can't see the other side of the handle. It could be a prop.
But it's nice that you believe in flying "Grannies" and since that is your belief, I'll not say more.

Heh.
If we can have Flying Nuns, we can have Flying Grannies!

I'm with you on this one, having some personal experience with the whole stupid human being dragged by big dog business. The time I dislocated my elbow was something similar - 90 pound dog at the end of a 30 ft. leash, 102 pound human at the other end. While he yanked my elbow out of the socket (the first thing to happen) and dragged me along the floor (second thing to happen) when I didn't let go of the leash, at no point did I go airborne. Or even come close.

Suja, yes, it would be hard to imagine it happening in that way. It wouldn't, however, be that hard to imagine a 25 year old Hollywood stuntman, dressed up like a little old lady, and with the help of some bungee cord and a false "reel," be rigged to "fly," just like that person in the film clip "flies."
At least not for me.
I have searched the web until my fingertips bled, looking for an explanation, but have thus far come up empty.
If anyone finds one, I'd sure like to hear from you.

Thanks!

Dig the advertisement on the right (under the spinning arrowhead). The film clip of the woman with the Great Dane and the retractable leash. It's gotta be staged, right? http://www.mediajonez.com/index.html?tv/deadwood real history0305.html

OK, I finally saw it. The third browser I tried was able to display it.

In complete ignorance of doctoring techniques, I think the motion of the "granny" is unrealistic. I have been yanked off my feet by dogs. Much smaller dogs (and I weigh a whole lot more than Suja). At the time I've had concerns other than estimating how high in the air I went, but I did cover some ground in the forward direction.

I guess physics would dictate that forward acceleration might tip me forward, but my center of mass would remain at the same height above the ground (initially). So Granny definitely goes up too high, unless she's a man with a very high center of mass.

Anyway, in the clip
1. The dog isn't accelerating anywhere near hard enough. Grantedit's bigger than my 75-pounder that broke on a retrieve with the slack cord attached to my waist, and the 100-pounder that panicked when we walked by the dog truck and everyone on it barked at once, but it's just not getting up enough head of steam.
2. "Granny's" motion is incorrect. Getting yanked off one's feet,IME, involves a terrific initial jerk, not a smooth, graceful takeoff. The kind that put me to bed with ice packs and ibuprofen.

Of course, I wasn't watching from the sidelines when I got yanked off my feet, but it still doesn't look convincing.

Think BUNGEE cord here, Amy. That would account for the smooth, graceful takeoff.
In fact, there is a bungee system used by the military services to extract soldiers and marines from behind enemy lines. A plane flies low to the ground and "snatches" one or more soldiers or marines into the air and then reels them in.
And when they get snatched into the air by the plane, they look very much like our "Granny" looks in that film clip.
