So my cat Lazlo is a little mischeivous.. but thats okay, because he is also one of the most loving kitties I have ever met. He LOVES to be around people... a little too much.

Lately at night when we are trying to sleep he likes to wake us up. He pounces all over the bed, claws at my hair, rubs his whiskers on our face. Then when we wake up, he wants out of the room..
Without fail, he wants back in 15 minutes later.

Normally i'd just say leave the door open, but that really isnt an option in our apartment. We have appliances that are barely functioning and loud enough to keep us awake at night.. That paired with our incredibly rude and loud downstairs neighbors, leaving the bedroom door open would prevent us from any sleep at all.

Lazlo's behavior is annoying because when he wants to come back in, he mean business. He paws at the door relentlessly while loudly meowing. And he never quits. I bet he would do it all night if we let it go...

We're kind of at a loss of what to do... any suggestions?

I have four indoor kitties and had the same problem. To solve my lack-of-sleep problem, I put all the kitties out and closed the door. For about the first week, they pawed at the door and cried relentlessly, again keeping us awake. To teach them to stop, I filled a spray bottle with water, and every time they came to the door to bug, I would open it a crack and spray them in the face. It only took a few nights for them to get the message. Now we have uninterrupted and restful nights. [Ye]
Incredible, cat behaviour can be so similar even though they live in absolutely different parts of the world! Mine would often do the same. For example, he kept coming in and out of my room every 10 mins in the deep evening when I was supposed to fall asleep, so I had to get up and close/open the room door all the time. Emotion: rolleyes (I couldn't leave it open either.) When he got bored of bothering me like that, he'd switch to my parents. Meowing, walking on the bed while he was not allowed to, meowing again till my mom wakes up and walks with him to the kitchen just to make sure the kitty has food in the bowls etc... she even began to joke about it saying that walking with Barsik in the night turned into a ceremonial, hehe. Maybe Barsik wants to make sure that we, humans, are still alive lol. Anyway... we didn't really find a good way to stop that behaviour. Fortunately, he doesn't do it every single night but when he's moody or feel mischievous.
Yes I definitely feel that its a combination of mischief and loneliness. He just loves to be around people! He tends to "act out" when he doesnt get attention so that could be the problem. I may have to try the water bottle thing if it doesnt calm down. I hate to do it to him but honestly, he probably doesn't realize hes bugging us that much.. I mean, he spends 75% of his day sleeping, while my boyfriend and I are busy from 7 am to 7pm..He probably doesnt understand the necessity of so much sleep at night!

No, he absolutely doesn't understand. Cats are nocturnal animals, so they are much more lively at night than during the day.
Sammy LynI hate to do it to him but
Don't let it bother you too much. You won't be hurting him at all. What you will be doing is training him to find something else to do while you sleep.

What I have found by doing this with my kitties is that they have turned their internal clocks around to accommodate my schedule. Now they play and cuddle during the evenings to spend time with me, and then sleep at night.

Indeed!
What we tried to do sometimes is to not let him sleep during the day so that he's kinda tired by night (not to mention it was kind of revenge lol). I think it helped in way, though of course we weren't so mean as to bug him all the day... Just occasionally. Eg "Hey Barsik, how come you're sleeping now? To bug us all night through again? C'mon, wake up, little mischief maker!" Emotion: giggle

You big meanie! LOL
If he doesn't feel pity for us, why should we feel pity for him? [6] Okay, okay, I said we were not toomean. We didn't do it too often. Emotion: it wasnt me But he did have an annoyed expression when we tried to keep him awake once in a while lol.
Well, I guess I have no choice but to forgive you ... we do the same thing around here sometimes. LOL
