I recently adopted a puppy (8 1/2 week old Chihuahua). Yesterday I brought him to the vet for his first checkup. (The breeder took him to the vet a few times to check for worms and to get his first puppy shot.).

The vet charged me $44.00 for this visit. The exam took about 15 minutes. They checked a stool sample for worms, took the puppy's temperature, and checked is general health, checked for fleas, etc.

Is the $44.00 about an average charge for this or is it on the high side? How much should I expect to pay for his next visit (his 2nd puppy shot). How much for when he gets his rabies shot?
Thanks!

I usually spent in the neighborhood of $160 for a first vet visit

Sounds about right.

It depends on your area I suppose. It is certainly not high for my area.

Ask them. And if price is an important consideration for you there are a number of options. You can often get the required vaccinations through "shot clinics" that show up on week-ends at may pet shop supply stores. The upside is money, the downside is no one gets to know your puppy, what is normal for it and what is not, you get no exam, no check to catch problems while they are still small, you get no advice or guidence, you are responsible for keeping your own records. I'd rather people used the shot clinics than do nothing. But getting a good relationship with a skilled veterinarian is a very useful goal.

Prices vary by location, of course. A routine visit at my vet costs at least $75 and that's without needing to run any tests.

44 is very cheap.

I'm in southern Calif (southern Orange County), my vet charges $40 for an office visit. I don't recall if I would have been charged additional for the stool sample for worms.
