It is extremely rare that a ball, or any snake, would bite and hold on. Most of the time if ... painless, maybe two pricks and a drop or two of blood and that's all. I'd say don't worry about it.

I agree. I've been bit by my boa several times, and she never constricted or held on. It was shocking, but not terribly painful except once when a tooth came out and got stuck in my hand because I jerked.

Hi. I am due to get a Ball Python tomorrow ... to owners who have had experience with keeping these snakes.

This echos my experience as well, although it was for lack of better description an innately scared BP. It was only about 2.5' long so it didn't amount to much...especially since it struck only my knuckle. Quick love tap and that was it.

If all you got was a couple of pinpricks, you got lucky. ;-) When that Ball hit me in the stomach, I bled like a stuck pig!

But, she got me with her entire jaw, both top and bottom.

It was not painful particularly, just messy and annoying.

Hmmmmmm... Wonder if Supernews is messed up? I'm on that newsgroup and I've not seen it. :-( Care to crosspost????

Do you suppose they'd thank us for that? Can't right now anyway, I just read and deleted all the posts. Maybe they just haven't made it to you yet. Cindy

I know that as a general rule, crossposting is frowned on, but if it's on topic it could be useful to have the input of a group that is on topic for that particular subject.
I personally don't mind crossposts as long as they are posted to groups where the discussion is relevant. :-)
I'll probably end up checking google groups if I don't see the posts come thru.
Cheers and thanks!

Snakebites are, to an extent, like shaving cuts in that their teeth are razor sharp and good at severing blood vessels near the surface of the skin, even though the actual amount of penetration is very minor. As a result, they do tend to bleed rather profusely.

Yep!
And the "fish hook" shape to them makes them a little difficult to dislodge. :-P

I got him! Such an amazing snake! very squeezy on the arm as opposed to my corn snake...lol. Seems very docile and unlikely to bite. Previous owner said he has never been bitten and he's had him for about
2 years. Such a cool snake!

Thanks to everyone who helped me with my question and offered advice and such!

Don't get complacent - my boa is sweet as anything, but bites me about once a year on average, and when he does he gives no warning.
The previous owner is probably not gay, so you should be very careful. Some snakes react to the odor of vaseline or anal-lube. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling the snake.
