HI everyone!! Any experienced cat owners here?? ^^ Our female cat gave birth to 5 kittens recently, and the father cat constantly checks the box they are in, he often sleeps besides it. When the mother cat goes away, he gets into the box, starts to lick the kittens and will sometimes cover them with the bedding... (digs it till the bedding covers the kittens) O_o I've heard that male cats can often kill their babies, so I'm a bit worried. Is such behaviour dangerous? He doesn't seem aggressive and in fact he's kinda a mellow fellow. Thanks ^^

It sounds to me more like he's being a very good and protective father. If he's hiding the babies when mom goes away, it's because he doesn't want predators to find and eat them. You'll see the same behaviour in wild and large cats.
