have been helping out in the snake shop while Johns wife went home to the US to visit her family, anway been a while i have worked, man my back hurt with the standing etc, but as i have been in the shop often at the customer side, and often overheard gossip etc i wanted to try the shop side.
First of all, people in the shop, and fone gave me the impression there are so many idiot herp keepers, and also many children who know a huge amount, and in a way that puts most of the adults to shame, some 10 year old who breeds lep gex and knows the terminolgy etc, compared to a guy who foned up, 'yeah my boa constrictor warm end is 96 and the cold is 84 and its sat on top of the Ig tank' it took a while to get from him that it was a young snake in a small plastic tank, this guy shouldnt be allowed to own a can opener never mind a living animal, i told him several times what he needed to do but i still dont think he took it in.

This other guy wanted some 'fuzzies', so off i hobbled to the freezer, and out of interest i said 'what snakes it for?', he said 'adult corn'.well i stopped, turned around and gave him a funny look, as did a young couple who keep many snakes, this guy had fed his snake the same size food since he had first got it, i ended up selling him the correct size, John says a lot of the time people are mis informed, which i saw as some people came in to buy a animal, yet the advice they had been given prior from somewhere else was totaly wrong, the animal(forget what) would have been dead in a month.

Anyway the shop had its quiet times and its mad rushes, it seemed people enjoyed keeping herps, also lots of parents wanting a snake for there kids as a pet, but actualy wanted to learn then go home and think before buying, rather than impulse.
I had seen most of the customers, and they knew me, i must admit i did give that bit of a extra service with a smile to the good looking girls, infact one has the hots for me, but shes a bit too ugly for me, and John says her bf is a thick and gets jealous easily.
I noticed that kids were willing to learn, and aks questions, but take in the info too, and some kids were well up too on whats what etc.

I worked a couple of days, and doing a few more from Wed helping out, im now hooked on a Royal Python, and a jungle, which i have always liked as it looks like a killing machine, John explained all about the many diff coloured corns, and where and what were mixed to pick the colours, not my cup of tea but interesting.
A lot of people came in saying there pets were ill and wanted advice, when i said a vet was the best bet they didnt look too impressed!

I really offerd to be a 2nd pair of eyes, as the shop can be busy and John cant keep a eye on everything, and unfortunatly the day i offerd and said i would be in the next day, not long after i went home he had 8 tortoises stolen, the week before someone broke in at night and stole a lot of young snakes, so it hadnt been a good time recently for him.

I wasnt too good at wrapping up frozen food in newspaper, that made a few people chuckle, but it was nice to help out, although it hurt and still does, i know i couldnt do it daily but those few hours were enjoyable and gave me a view from the other side, i had guessed John was worried as as a customer i speak my mind and often called people idiots to there face when they said stupid things or were cruel etc but i did have to bite my tongue with some diplomacy.
John gave me a lift home and i showed him my animals, i asked him if i was doing a ok job and he said they all looked fine, he was impressed with the size of the young Ackie(whihc would rather starve than eat black crix!) and the frog eye gex. I always try the best with my animals and hope i do a good job.
I had for a few years looked at helping at rescue centres, but i know my back wouldnt be up to it, esp with the cold damp weather here, but watching a few yank animal cop shows on cable i saw some limey chicks so if i can find a nice girl in the US, who lives in the hot dry parts(CA, NV would be better!) then im off! Im sure even i could offer something!

Sounds like you had a great time, and that it was just what you needed. Can your back stand up to helping out 2-3 times a month at the shop, and would John let you? Sounds like great therapy. This is the first time I've heard you sound content for quite awhile.

Good for you! Sounds like you enjoyed yourself in spite of your pain, and helped a lot of people too!

Im sure he would, the back is a no win situation, if i move it hurts like hell, but if i dont it gets weaker and hurts, which is why i stopped wearing a back support. Im sure it would be ok, well it cant hurt to try! Im worred about MOD who hasnt posted here for a while, or replied to my post last week.

This lack of self-control I fear is never ending, controlling, I can’t seem, to find myself again.
