Got up this morning to find about 6 - 8" of dental floss hanging out of Boots' butt. I trimmed all but 1" of it off so it wouldn't snag on anything and get pulled. Should the rest come out tomorrow when he does his morning constitutional? Is there anything I should give him to help it on it's way? How long should I wait for the rest to pass before taking him to the vet?

Gee, Wendy, I hate to just parrot the "See A Vet" mantra, but if it were my cat, I'd..call the vet today. I'm certainly not an expert, but it seems to me a length of dental floss could become entwined where it shouldn't and cut into tissue. Good luck.

How long should I wait for the rest to pass before taking him to the vet?[/nq]My cat had 6 inches of tinsel hanging out of his butt. I GENTLY and EASILY pulled out a foot long piece of tinsel. I never use tinsel. It must have blown in from the neighbors or something. My cat was fine. I might give your cat a little mineral oil or petramalt to help ease the passage of the floss. If 6 inches was hanging out of his butt, there's probably only 6 inches in there if you only use 12 inches.

That means it should just be in his colon, rectum and made it past the rest of his insides. I bet he poops it by tomorrow. Keep him inside and check his litter box. He may even pull it out himself cleaning. Hopefully he doesn't swallow it again. Of course you have to hide all floss from him.

I've got to hide everything from him. Talk about a getinski. I'm forever finding him IN the trashcans. He digs paper out of them and plays with it. Yea henceforth the floss gets tossed out in the kitchen trashcan with the lid.

I sympathize I haave one like him. We have to be so careful with rubber bands in particular. She will eat them, I know she would. And sewing..forget it if she's in the room.. she is attracted to the pins and needles.

Anything stringy of length ingested requires a visit to the vet.

String can get tangled up in the GI causing real damage. Since you don't know exactly how much was consumed, best you get to the vet asap.

Actually I have a pretty good idea how much he ate. He got it out of the trash not out of the dispenser.
Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but a lot of people keep a jar with lid for used floss and then toss to avoid this. Glad he passed it.

Otherwise she will dig into the trash, find the q-tip and chew on it. I don't know if it is the cotton, the shape makes it an appealing toy or what. I thought perhaps it was earwax since I use them to dry water out of the outer part of my ear after a shower (can not stand water in my ear) but one time she managed to get into the shelf while I was outside working in the gardens.

And I learned clean q-tips are just as good. I came in and there were q-tips EVERYWHERE. All over the house. I guess she kept getting more and carrying them off. Since then I have been very careful about letting her find any.
