Looking at him, he seemed a bit like a Saint, but the wrong color, and with tight flews. His coat ... more kisses right before I left, and gave me that 'Hey, where are you going? Pet me some more.' look.

Sounds like a Leonberger to me. If so, how wonderful to reach such an advanced age!

Yeppers. Though frankly it is one breed I have really rarely, rarely heard of. I have heard of it mentioned but never have seen one to behold.

There's one that visits a local park. I'm usually really good at identifying breeds on the street, but I asked this woman one day what kind of mix her dog was. She introduced me to her Leonberger. I've seen him a handful of times, and he's so even tempered and pleasant. He scares the *** out of Orson though, as do most dogs that tower over him.

This was my first Leo, and gawd, he's a love! So mellow and sweet, and just beautiful. If the he ... he is), I just might have to add it to my growing list of 'Dogs I must have some day'.

I've met probably ten or so. Two regularly at agility trials.
On a separate note, someone on the Dane Forum found an advertisement "Free to A good Home 7 Beautiful 10 ... Out Of Dog Business Due To Opening A New Type Of Business. Hurry They Must Go ASAP. Please Call XXX.."

Yikes!
A "Going Out of Business" Sale. Isn't that nice? Thankfully, Saint rescue got involved.

Whew!

Suja,
Before I read the other answers, Hovart?

Looking at him, he seemed a bit like a Saint, but the wrong color, and with tight flews. His coat ... on the breed is generally not that black, and that the black tips on his coat are just really prominent.

My guess is Leonberger.
Turns out, he's 11 1/2 years old, and absolutely wonderful with all living critters. He gave me a couple more kisses right before I left, and gave me that 'Hey, where are you going? Pet me some more.' look.

And I would expect that with a Leo...there is a breeder that takes her's herding where I used to go. Beautiful dogs with even lovlier temperaments. At 11 1/2 years, that would be pretty old for a Leo...I'd love to to think I'm right, and they can live that long. :-)

Okay, so this one probably belongs on the rpd.breeds, but I thought y'all might enjoy it. Went to the vet ... more.' look. My last bad breed misidentification: I identified some dogs as Irish Wolfhounds. Turns out, they were Scottish Deerhound.

Leonberger?
Mustang Sally
Sounds like a Leonberger.

I REALLY like them. I have known a few and when we were in Italy this summer, we had a ... parking area. They would greet us with play bows every time we arrived - very charming. Janet Boss http://bestfriendsdogobedience.com /

They look very lovely from looking at them when I did a search. I have honestly never seen one in person.
