Today I saw about 30 bright red, ripe cactus fruit, and 3 times as many flowers on some large opuntia gardens. They are in private gardens, but I should be able to get permission to pick. Lots of pads available, too.

I have tried eating the fruit. First, lose the hair spines, peel, scoop out a couple hundred seeds, and ready to eat.
I tried pouring milk and sugar over the fruit, but the milk curdled, and the whole experience was less than satisfactory. This time, no milk.
