I'm looking into caging requirements for breeding corn snakes. (I want to know what this is going to cost in time and money before I get into it.) I've read websites and flipped through books, now I'm looking for advice from you guys.
I know there's a big debate on how big a cage is needed for an adult corn snake. What is your opinion on housing one adult in a 2 foot by 2 foot cage, 1 foot high? This would be for "average" sized corns, any 6 footers would need bigger, in my opinion.
I'm thinking of making the cages out of thin melamine, with a plexi front on hinges. Can heat tape heat through melamine? If not, is there a good way to heat a stack of cages from the outside? (Besides a warm room, they'll have that already. I just need something for a temp gradient.) I'm trying to avoid expensive glass tanks and opaque sweater boxes. :-)
TIA

Your best caging for breeding would be rack systems. An average sized corn snake can be kept in a blanket box or sweater box. Emotion: smile

I keep all my corns in neodeshas-3' x 2' x 2' and that works well, as since most of them have lived together all their lives before I got them, I keep 2 to a cage. Only had one with feeding problems, and we found out that he just couldn't handle large mice anymore-even though they were right for his size.

Heat tape cannot heat through melamine, you would have to mount it inside the cage, which is why I'm not fond of melamine. With the neos, I just aluminum-tape my heat mats to the bottom and it works great.

Yeah, I was just hoping to be able to set up something where I could see the snakes easily, without it costing an arm and a leg. :-/

These are all kept in separate shoe boxes right now.

Ouch! Neodesha would be quite an investment. :-( It's looking more and more like a rack system. Ah, well.

On a rack, can you wire all the heat tape together to make fewer plugs?

Also, do you know of a good place to get blanket boxes in the Seattle area? Any chain of stores? I'd like to price them.

BTW, do snake breeders do breeding loans?

Rack systems are best. I just got neodesha because I have boas, too-and it works good for both.

I don't see why not. If you get a commercially-built rack, they are pre-wired.

walmart. Emotion: smile Or Target. Those are the two cheapest places.

Some do, some don't. It depends on the breeder. With all the diseases and distrustful people around, you won't have much luck unless you know a snake breeder really, really well.

Hey, isn't there a Boxes, Etc. type store in Lynnwood... past Alderwood Maul, near the Lynnwood Theater?

Very important considerations. It's a lot easier with spiders! :-)

Thanks for all the advice!

There's a Storables. I'll have to check it out. They've got a great selection, but their prices are from hell.
