I spent my evening teaching a couple of dogs to ride in a canoe. It has been years since I've paddled a canoe...I'm happy to say it's like riding a bike; I remember how. The J-stroke is still there. What I didn't remember was to take a cushion. Stability helps dogs relax, a low center of mass promotes stability, and that means kneeling. My knees are sore.
One dog is going to go on a canoe trip with his owners. The other is terrified of the water, and I'm grasping at straws. It seemed like it might be a step in the right direction to have him out in the middle of a pond, enjoying himself, having overcome some anxiety to get there.
