I'm a cop in a small Alabama town (between that, and being on Web-Tv; I know that I'm asking for it!), and yesterday, while on patrol, I encountered a gray rat snake crossing the roadway. I usually keep a snake sack in my patrol car for such instances, but I'd washed if, and neglected to replace it. I blocked the road with my car, and moved the snake well off the roadway.
A lady who lives nearby witnessed my good deed, and called the station to complain. The dispatcher knew of my hobby, and explained that she was certain that the snake was non-venomous, etc. The lady was highly upset that I hadn't killed the snake, or at least relocated it. The truth is, there are very few suitable relocation areas here in our jurisdiction anymore, and this was as rural of an area as you could find. About an hour later, I drove back down that road, and the snake had been hit, despite my good intentions.
To make matters worse, this morning; the lady found a snake on her porch, AND her phone wasn't working. She was convinced that I had returned during the night, planted the snake, and cut her phone line! She called the station from a neighbor's to complain on me to the Chief, who wasn't working due to the holiday.
I can't wait to go into work tomorrow.
Stay safe,
KBC
