Hi!
I am a new-bird-owner-to-be. My sister has a caique, and I have taken care of her many times, so I have an idea what I'm getting into. I've decided to go with a red bellied parrot based on the reading I have done. However, I can't decide between buying a male or female.

The plus on the male side, from what I've read, is that besides being a bit more colorful, they are better talkers than the female. One site (www.wingscc.com/aps/re-desc.htm) says that the females don't talk.

The breeder I am buying from currently has two females: one newly weaned, and the other about five months old. I haven't met them. A new batch is expected soon, and I could choose a male if there is one. The male would cost a bit more, but that's not really the deciding factor. I'm more interested in whether there are noticeable personality differences between the two sexes. And can the females talk?

I would appreciate any help or suggestions on this.

Thanks! Emotion: smile
Teresa,
I don't have any experience with females. But my roommate that I lived with for 3 years had a red-bellied male. (at least we thougth he was a male)...never really sexed to be sure. But, he was awesome, very smart and had a vocabulary of over 30 words and phrases. In fact, he is the reason my husband and I have parrots now. He was very loyal to her, and the only bad thing was that he hated everyone else.
But, I wish you luck, and I hope that you have found a reputable breeder, really the only thing that matters it that you are happy with your new friend, it is a looong comittement, so make sure this is really what you want. Birds are lound, and messy..just beware!!
Good luck
Kathie
I have a male and female Red-Bellied (not a breeding or bonded pair) and have worked with several other Red-Bellieds and other species of Poicephalus. The females are rather demure, less boisterous than the males. They can talk but they don't like to as much as the males do. They're very sweet and friendly birds, IMO. The males, on the other hand, are real jokers and will occasionally astonish you with their talking or clowning around.

You probably know about the coloration differences. I think that the females are every bit as appealing as the males, but in a more subdues way.

Good luck.
