All I can say is you get used to it. Although I do have a concrete patch out back where Orson will pee, we do have to walk him 2 or 3 times a day, one of which includes a 30-60 minute session of running, swimming, or fetching every day. Frankly, it's not enough. When we lived closer to places to exercise him, he got 1-2 hours offleash every day.

The sometimes PITA of walking a dog in the city is a small nuisance when compared with figuring out how to give the dog the exercise it needs to stay physically and mentally healthy. That's a much bigger challenge to meet than is getting used to walking in the cold and rain.

Considering that there appear to be a gazillion dogs in Manhattan alone, I'd say that it isn't all that difficult to do. Lots of things you can do - get a breed of dog that is more into snoozing on the couch than going for long walks, decide that exercise is good for your soul and do what it takes to keep your dog entertained, hire a dog walker so you don't have to do the walking quite so frequently, take the dog to one of the off-leash dog parks in the area, etc.

Yes, there are a lot of dogs here. But a dog walker is $15-$20 per walk. Dogs need 3 or 4 potty walks per day.
Hence, the problem.

why can't you walk the dog yourself? my dogs can "hold it" for at least 8 hours (fortunately they don't have to due to my work schedule). as long as you don't get a toy dog or a puppy, i don't think you'd need to hire a walker. unless you work 10 hour days or something, in which case you might consider getting fish. :-)

Mine get two outings a day, each lasting at least an hour. They seem quite happy with that. And yes, they will get walked even when there is
18 inches of snow on the ground, or it is -10 degrees out.

Yea, I already have fish.

So, how does it feel? Pluralizing all of your dog nouns, I mean. Pretty cool, I expect.
