Hi all,
I have a beagle who is three years old. He is doing just fine but I have a question about the crate. I keep him in it for my work week which is 5 days and 8 hours a day. When I get home he is out of course with me and sleeps with me. My question is it ok for him to spend this much time in the crate. Also, On the weekends he is out of the crate unless I go out. Just want to be sure I am not hurting him. He seems fine and is always playful. Although he does at times seem a little tired or lazy. But he does whine very loudly when I get home. It really makes me feel horrible sometimes. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks
Tom

Why?

Not really. An adult dog shouldn't need that much confinement.

Is he destructive? Not housebroken? Have you tried a room such as the laundry room or kitchen? Crates are wonderful tools, used wisely. But they're too often used as a cop-out for training.

If he is housebroken and not destructive, he should be able to be alone in one room and maybe eventually the whole house. My dog is 1 year old but he just sleeps whenever someone is not home so he hasn't been crated for awhile, just penned in my room with a babygate. Yesterday though, he proved he might be ready for an even larger space because he climbed over the gate when we weren't home and had the whole house to himself, upstairs and down. I searched all over when I got home and I couldn't find anything disturbed so he must have been well behaved.

Why not start leaving him out of the crate when you are not in the house, start by going out for 15 mins to see how he behaves. Once you can trust him you can start leaving him out of the crate all day. Have you thought about having a dog walker come at lunch time? Alison

assuming there is a reason for him being crated for those lengths of time, no, i don't think it is necessarily harmful. but, that depends on what sort of quality time you spend with him. letting him sleep with you is important it's an opportunity to bond. making sure he gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation is also important.

if he's acting lazy, it's an indication that something is lacking. Beagles are an active breed, and he's way too young to be slowing down due to age. how much physical exercise is he getting? he also may need more mental stimulation. are you working with him on training (if his obedience is good, then what about tricks)? two or three short training sessions (just a minute or two long) each day can make a huge difference in his mental state. also walking or giving him an opportunity to see stuff/people/dogs outside his yard is mentally stimulating.
