I have an all black cat with a very sleek coat. I brush him regularly, and when I do, he seems to have dandruff all over his back. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it dandruff?

Yes both of my black cats have this same problem, but I dont' know what to do about it, either so I can't be any help, hopefully someone else will read this and know the answer!! I don't brush them, though...they are short haired.

One of my two black cats has this problem every winter. Last year I started adding the contents of derma-caps(?) into her canned food, but I don't think it made a tremendous difference. She doesn't seem to be trying to scratch any more than normal.

Yes, it is dandruff. All cats can have dandruff, it's just that it's much more noticeable in dark, sleek cats. However, if you look at the brush after you brush any cat, you may see flakes.

Dandruff can be perfectly normal in a cat, but it can also be indicative of health conditions. How old is your cat? Has the amount of dandruff increased?
As long as the cat gets a clean bill of health from the vet, to reduce the amount of dandruff, you can try adding small amounts of an omega3 supplement (fish oil) to his food to see if it helps. Also, switching to a canned-food diet if he's a dry-food eater can assist in mitigating the dandruff.
Also, see these:

Holly had this problem, but her vet said she is in excellent condition. She is also a black cat (beautiful, glossy fur), and dandruff will be much more obvious on them other cats may have the same (or more) dandruff, but it won't be noticed because the color of the dandruff may be disguised by the color of their fur.
I said Holly "had" this problem. About a year ago, I changed her diet to almost-entirely canned food. She and Duffy both get Wellness canned and Felidae canned. Holly's fur became even more luxurious, and I noticed after a few weeks that she now has almost no dandruff. That came as a nice surprise it wasn't something that I expected when I made the change.

Thanks for the responses! Laura, He's a two year old male with a sleek black coat that's always had a little dandruff. Just saw the vet about 2 weeks ago for his annual check-up and he is in very good health. I read the two sites you recommended and am going to try brushing him more regularly. Also I might try some fish oil or safflower oil as suggested. We're in the Northeast in the midst of a terrible cold snap and the heat is on constantly and it's very dry in here. That may be contributing too! Thanks for the help

Ah, I'm in NYC, so I know exactly what you mean about the air. Cripes, I left Michigan to get away from this stuff! ;-)

Glad to hear that your cat is healthy; I'd say that your best bet is to follow the route you've outlined above. :-) You might also want to consider some additional portable humidifiers, if even just in your bedroom- my cats and I sleep much better when the place is about 40% humid, and their fur looks much better, too.

I'm closeby in Westchester! It has been unbelievably cold! The humidifier is a great idea, I've been talking about getting one for awhile... Now maybe I'll motivate myself to get one! Thanks again for all your suggestions Emotion: smile Judy F

Westchester, CT, or West Chester, PA? (I'm assuming CT). If I wanted weather like this, I'd have stayed up north! ;-)
You won't regret the humidifier, especially if you suffer from any kind of sinus/nasal issues.
