hi all
i wasnt sure where i should post this so i thought i might start here.

i wanted to run something by you all if i may.
i home check for a breed rescue and as a result i have two deaf dalmatians that have been trained with sign and compete in obedience and agility. my thought was this, im the grand scheme of things i have one more course to do and some seminars and work shops to attend and then i hope to start a dog club. currently i visit homes that have contacted the rescue and help them find their feet with deaf dog sign. before and indeed if i pass out ok on my courses i have been thinking about starting an informal class for deaf dogs or hearing dogs that the owners would like to sign for.
i sign my hearing dogs as i feel it helps to underline my spoken command and visa versa with my deaf dogs i speak when i sign.

so if you do or were to have a deaf dog or wanted to teach in sign would you consider attending a class like this?
thanks dally girl

If I had a deaf dog, I would need some help, probably from a class and good trainer to teach me how to teach the dog. For a hearing dog, I am not so sure but it could be good. I mostly use signs with my commands but they are purely made up by me. Anyway, my dog knows them so he responds to the made up, non-verbal stuff I have been using since I first got him.

Yep, I have been using makaton signs with my dog- I use them with the people I work with- whether they have a hearing impairment or not. Now I just have to waggle my thumb back and forth (the finished sign) and she goes and lies down without me having to say a word. I'd love to learn doggy signing -)

whats makaton? thats great you use sign with your dogs, my elderly patterdale went deaf with old age and unfortunatly communication was crap and she was to old and stiff to learn over but by then she didnt really care. got up to eat and piddle then snuggled back in her fleecy bed.

with my terrier in mind i taught my hearing dog sign too so should she lose her hearing we have a back up plan Emotion: smile also if im talking to someone in the street all i have to do is sign her to come back and sit.

thanks for your replies,dg.
