Hi all
My 8 month old (labradoodle) puppy Eddie loves to eat fruit so I always given him a little bit when I eat some(Peach, apple, cherries). He's never reacted badly(i.e diarrhea or gas) but today I gave him 1/2 a banana and he has been farting continuously.
Anyone else have any similar experiences with banana's and dogs? Just curious why it would make him fart.

I have sort of the same problem with my 3 year old cocker spaniel. Its not with fruit however. When we change his food from canned kibbles and bits to canned alpo, he farts and it really smells. I dont know what really causes the odor.

Just so you know fruit isn't bad for a dog just don't ever give him grapes or raisins. They can be toxic to a dog and kill them.

If he gets gas this bad from a banana I don't think I'd give him any more or maybe not just quite as much..Emotion: smile

Those are pretty low quality foods. I'd try upgrading to Eukanuba, Sensible Choice, California Natural or something along those lines. They are more expensive but well worth it.
As far as the bananas & the OP's dog, I'd assume he's having difficulty digesting them. Mine won't touch them.

Yes, half a banana is quite a bit.
My Thelma is quite a fruit fiend and
a major banana fiend, but we give it
out in small bite size chunks.

Yea, I think only Ol' Roy can beat 'em. And canned on top of it. Unless he's getting canned food for medical reasons, dry is more nutritious (less water) and better for the teeth.
I think I'm going to have to put this in my sig file. :}

When I post this, people normally chime in with other good quality foods. I believe they're all much costlier than this one, though, plus harder to find, and have similar formulas. That's why I always recommend Chicken Soup.

I don't know much about California Natural and less about Sensible Choice, but Eukanuba is not what I would call a high quality dog food.

Adult Maintenance Formula Top 6 Ingredients:
Chicken
Chicken By-Product Meal
Corn Meal
Ground Whole Grain Sorghum
Ground Whole Grain Barley
Fish Meal
Better than a lot of foods out there, but no match for Chicken Soup (or similar high quality foods):
Chicken
turkey
chicken meal
turkey meal
whole grain brown rice
whole grain white rice
There's other good stuff, like duck, salmon, potatoes, carrots, peas, kelp.

Plus I don't believe (didn't find it on the site, but I might be wrong) Eukanuba uses human-grade meats. That means they could be using diseased chickens. And as for by-products, that could be just about anything. Organ meats are by-products, but I don't think I want to feed my dog a liver from a diseased animal.
