I took my non-water-type dog duck hunting Sunday. She correctly marked the birds, jumped from the blind, retrieved the birds. In other words, she did everything a water fowler SHOULD do.
But she's a VERY short backed long haired breed, thats very leggy. Not exactly a swimming type dog. In fact, the breed is known for their hatred of water. She's a Nordic breed. She's in great shape, running daily about
15 miles. But the breed naturally has a very round body and VERY shortback.
Other hunting dogs wear life jackets. I never gave a life jacket a thought until she had to pursue a duck way out on the lake until she dissappeared.Ultimately she did catch the duck, and find her way back. But she was so EXHAUSTED. It never occurred to me that a dog in her condition could be so tired, but she never did all that swimming pursuing a wounded duck before, and she never had to swim anywhere very far carrying a struggling duck. So I decided she DID need a life jacket.A little bouyancy should prevent her from tiring as much.
But where would you find a life jacket about 14 inches long (withers to base of tail) and 26 inch girth? It would need to be a shortie life jacket for dogs.

I've seen some vinyl-covered foam vests that are very short. Here's one.

I have the other kind (long, fabric, float-on-top).

Have you seen the "CRITTER'S INFLATABLE PET PRESERVER"? I think it is just what you are looking for. (It comes in sizes to fit 6 lbs. to 200 lbs.)
Check Cabellas sporting goods.
