hate it when you're not paying a lot of attention and some human, who is helping take yard bags out to the front, leaves the gate open?

And then you let the dogs out and don't think too much about it, but they both seem a little too interested in the gate, so you stick your head out the door to see that the gate is open and two dogs are going through?
And don't you just hate it when you remember that Beanie's a runner and Bella's not much better? And you remember how much Doodle used to love running off to explore?
But don't you love it when you happy call the dogs and they turn on a dime and run to you?

I'm not exactly sure what a "happy call" is, but it sounds like it works.
Good show!

I'm not exactly sure what a "happy call" is, but it sounds like it works.

Remember how Woodhouse used to call for "Walkies!"?

Well, this was "Girlies! Come girls!" (sounding suspiciously like the tone of voice I use when saying, "I have a biscuit for you!")

Is that your usual command to come?
Did you change their names to "Girlies"? Emotion: smile
Yeah, I know. This is picking nits, right?
But IMO, it is particularly important to be 100% consistent* with *the most important command your dog will ever learn.

And if you normally use their NAMES (which, absent a whistle, is always the best way to get a dog's immediate* attention), plus "Come!" when you're training them (which you should), then you should also do it *exactly that way when an actual emergency presents itself.
Ninety nine times out of a hundred your dog's life isn't on the line when this happens, but for that one time it is, it can mean the difference between life and death.

Hopefully, Celeste, you'll have that "pan with the cookies" with you, and whatever you bang it with, say, on that fateful day when she gets so excited that she chases her favorite ball into the street, just as that Fed-Ex truck is speeding towards her.
Hopefully.

You have made a good point.
I made a split second decision to call them in a happy, playful manner because I did not want to sound stressed. I usually do call them using that tone of voice unless I whistle. And yes, I do normally call them "girlies" as well as by name. If I want both of them to react at the same time, they get "girlies."
We work on recall, we need more work on recall. I don't think either one of them is entirely reliable, but it's really the first time that Beanie's had a chance to take off in six months and she didn't act on that opportunity.

Humans need training (and reps) as much as their dogs do, Montana.

If the owner/handler doesn't always issue commands in the same way, don't you think it's a little unfair to expect the dog to always respond in a certain way?
When it comes to training dogs, sloppiness begets sloppiness.

And sloppiness in the recall can get a dog DEAD.
We work on recall, we need more work on recall. I don't think either one of them is entirely reliable, but it's really the first time that Beanie's had a chance to take off in six months and she didn't act on that opportunity.

You've made a lot of progress, obviously. But I'd use only their names, if I were you, when you issue COMMANDS. It's okay to use "girlies" as small talk, of course, but when you really expect (and DEMAND) that they obey, and pronto, you should stick to using their names, followed by the command.
And that'll take practice on your part.
Doing it in precisely that way should become just as much of a habit for you as it is for your dogs to immediately obey your commands.

If you believe that CONSISTENCY is critical to successful and reliable dog training, you'll start with being consistent when you issue COMMANDS.
