Duhh I am SO DUMB. Couldn't understand why my new little tegu wasn't coming out to bask or eat. I set him up right next to my BIG HUNGRY blue-tongued skinks, who stare at him with GREAT INTEREST. Poor little guy. I put some nice pink construction paper on the side of his tank to calm him down. Do you suppose lizards like pink, or would maybe green or brown be better?

If your tegu is a female, she'll love it. I think you should increase the amount of food for her/him, he/she must have pooed a lot for fear and have lost weight.

Cindy, my tegu is more active during early spring and summer and eats like a pig. Starting in late summer he slows down and sleeps most of the time and only comes out once in a while for a very short time and hardly eats anything at all and then goes back and sleeps for days on the cool side of his enclosure. My vet gave him a clean bill of health so I just let nature take its course.

That sounds just like my female beardie!
I'd say she spends around 75% of the time in her hidy box lately and just pops out for something to eat from time to time. I worry she's not getting enough UVB doing this though so try to encourage her to come out more often if I can.

Yep, my male beardie does the same thing. He will hide in his box under the newspaper and sleep for about three days and then he will get up and eat, poop, and return to a normal basking, sleeping cycle for three or four days and then repete this process all over again.

That's just what she does, but might only spend a day or two out at a time and only for half the day. On the other hand, Mr Man is either perched on his shelf under the UVB or basking under the heatlamp ... that's when he's not stuffing his face or following me around the flat wanting attention Emotion: wink

lol
I have to do it just for the opposite reason, my tegus scare the crud out of everything next to them! Huff even got to scare one of my cats, the cat was trying to climb out of the window, stepped into Huff's view, tegu went ballistic, cat decided to leap for it. :-)

I use newspaper between cages, folds out nice and long and there's always fresh if I need to change it. (Just be sure there aren't any articles visible that you don't want the tegu to read.)
