One of my dogs, Duncan, was put to sleep this morning. He's been deteriorating for a long time and about a month ago, after a bunch of diagnostics failed to turn up anything, our vet said that she thought it was a brain tumor because it was progressing so quickly. He recently dropped a lot of weight despite having switched him over to a high fat, high calorie diet, and yesterday he stopped eating completely.
Duncan was never an easy dog. He hated being handled. Even though we'd practiced getting the harness on and off at home, the first time I took him sledding I got him out of the car and he started SCREAMING as soon as I started getting him into the harness. It was during deer season and an absolutely beautiful day, and the woods were (relatively) full of hunters who I'm sure heard the hullaballoo and thought someone was killing a dog. But once he was harnessed and hooked in he trotted along, enjoying the day, enjoying the movement, and taking great, great care not to actually do any pulling himself.

He was a dog who loved going for walks about as much as any dog ever has, and unlike the others, who spend their walks checking out smells and looking for rabbits and groundhogs, Duncan always trotted straight down the road with his head in the air and his tail held high, happy just to be taking in the day. We knew this was coming but it's still very, very sad.

I will light a candle for Duncan tonight. I am
not good with words, other than I am sorry.
He is no longer in pain. He is a free spirit
now, young and bold again.

I am so sorry to hear about Duncan. He sounds like a great guy. It's so hard to lose a dear pup.

Sleep well, Duncan. I'll miss your stories about him.

Very sorry for your loss, Melinda. He was a handsome boy (I'm a sucker for the reds).

I know you're particularly fond of bi-eyed reds, which he was. He was the only one of my dogs that looked like a conventional show-type Siberian. Saber is a badly-bred mess who's built like the cartoon Tasmanian Devil, and the other three are sleddy.
Thanks for the kind thoughts.

Melinda, I am so sorry. What a sweet face he had. A beautiful red fuzzy bear. He'll be in my thoughts tonight. As will you and the rest of your pack.
