I don't think you got it. The government needs to tell the people. I have written the FDA to see what the risk is to cats.

While you're at it, ask the FDA about Hartz. You can trust them. (not)

on 29 Dec 2003: You're not looking hard enough. There has been plenty said. Cats are one of the animals ... to have M-B-M material of rendered beef. Cat food mainly consists of poultry and poultry by-products. You do the math.

And Cheryl you are looking waay too hard for something that does not exist. Please point us to the published study that in any way illustrates that chickens can pass along this disease. Point of fact they cannot. You are playing chicken little here with no data to support your position.
I never wrote what you stated below.

Cathy, aren't you worried about your own financial situation? Of course, economics are a daily part of life. But this is really a media driven story and the sheeple are lapping it up! People here are mentioning the govt. wanting to have people killed, big conspiracies on the part of big business, etc..gimme a break! I've learned that there are a lot of whackjobs in these ngs! You would think (based on some of the people in this ng) that we've been dealing w/ BSE here in the US for decades now and something must be done! This is a 1 time, isolated case from ONE COW!! I would suggest that everybody freak out once we have a widespread outbreak.

However, that's not what we're dealing w/ right now. I'm IN the Pac. NW Portland, Vancouver area. I'm one of the people that would be most affected by this whole scare. I'm not worried at all. If I lived anywhere in the Midwest or East, I wouldn't even give it much of a second thought. I don't live my life in fear and just waiting to be scared. The only thing I'm really worried about (a little) is another terrorist attack either here in the US or elsewhere.

A little perspective here would be helpful, no?
ONE COW is going to be in all of these cat foods?? I would like somebody to tell me how many cat food companies buy their ingredients from the rendering plant that processed this ONE COW. Until then, everybody should just sit tight and not worry. Good grief!
Again, you are assuming the worst. Isn't that just a bad as assuming the best naviety?
How do you know it's full disclosure? Was it the ... better off if we doubted the government a little more.

They've been saying the same thing in DC over the anthrax scares. They just didn't know, and were way too quick in trying to keep people from panicking. They were wrong.

No, they weren't wrong. I did quite a bit of research on anthrax and it's quite hard to contract. You have to inhale the spores (which would dissapate quite rapidly in the open air) and the subcutaneous "version" is hardly fatal (unless it goes untreated). You can't "catch" it from another infected person. The fact that "they" were telling everyone NOT to panic was the right advice all along. If you're a nervous nellie, then perhaps you should become a reclusive hermit like Howard Hughes! What's the matter w/ you people that you would prefer to be paranoid and always jump to the worst conclusion?

Yeah, sometimes it is the consumers decision whether to take the risk or not (if there is a way not to, I'm beginning to wonder). Even if the risk is only to a small number, that isn't good enough for me. As its been pointed out, the main concern seems to be the bottom line. It makes me sick about some of the information coming out lately WRT testing. At least there is now a ban on using downers when there wasn't up until this happened. They actually processed downer cattle before test results came back. Shipped it on out.
